I placed a smal zip tie, so that it was loosely wrapped around the spring, close to the bracket. Pried the spring down with a long flat head, and tightened the zip tie down collapsing the three metal prongs. This allowed me to pull the cable right up through the bracket.

Although I love collecting tools and I know there's nothing better then the right tool for the job... the cheap guy in me got this done using a zip tie to compress and hold the spring.
This is the approach my mechanic suggests. I'm going to be doing a Thanksgiving rear rotor swap, hopefully not too annoying a process. Thanks to everyone on the forum for the tips.
