Oil Cooler Orientation

Hey everyone, First time posting here, been lurking ever since getting my 2012 Mustang GT, I am getting ready to install my oil cooler, and was wondering if there could be any issues with mounting it with the fittings facing the bottom. Could it cause oil pockets in the oil cooler? Possibly cause the oil cooler to drain back into the sump when the car is off, then when you start the car it will be running with the system unprimed?

Just a few questions before installing my setup. Looking at other peoples installs, it seems common that fittings are at the bottom of the oil cooler. A quick google started to scare me.

That should not be any issue; I and a number of others have our oil-to-air coolers mounted with the fittings facing downward.
As far as startup, what I would recommend is to use the built-in "priming method" courtesy of the PCM programming:

Hold the clutch and throttle completely to the floor at the same time, and turn the key. The engine will crank but not fire. It will continue to turn for up to 10 seconds in this fashion. If you want to start the car, simply release the throttle pedal while the engine is cranking.

If the car sits for a week or more I would use this method 2-3x prior to the initial fire.

Are you adding a Ford cooler, another brand or are you building your own??
Regardless which way you go, the cooler should not drain back. The cooler is on the pressure side of the oil system. Basically the oil flow is redirected either going into or coming out of the oil filter and passes through the cooler system before entering or leaving the filter. Drain back when shut off should not be a problem. In fact, the only time the cooler may drain back is when the filter has been removed for an oil change.

If you are concerned with drain back, you can "Prime" the system. Before cranking the key hold the gas pedal to the floor. The computer will allow the engine to crank but not start. This allows the oil pressure to build before firing.

BTW, I mounted the sandwich plate for the cooler on my Boss with the fittings facing down. About the only option I had. Be sure to check the fittings every oil change to ensure they stay tight. I had a leaker after I installed mine.

Thanks for the tips guys, i didnt know about that engine start method of priming the engine, great to know. I will be running two HKS 15 row oil coolers instead of the typical setrab install.. These 15 rows have less density in terms of the fins, and allow much more air to flow through them. Most of the locals cars were i live (Dubai, UAE) run a dual setup on 500whp Evos etc and are able to maintain 100 degree celcius temps for 30 minute sessions. They seen very effective. I will post pics after my custom install.
