Boss Tranny for track

I'm looking to upgrade my transmission (12 boss 302) to take more abuse. Only issue currently grinds into 5th gear. I'm taking it to be worked on next week and as long as its pulled I want to do as many quality upgrades that I can.

Currently installed, Barton Hybrid 3 direct mount shifter.

Give me your thoughts on necessary quality upgrades, new clutch? new slave? lighter flywheel? carbon fiber driveshaft? Stage 1 upgrade kit?

Interested to see what the tracks guys have..

Thanks for your time and help in this manner! :D

I'd look up the 'Ben Calimer' internal upgrades too.

Thanks for your reply Grant, I did forget to mention that car will stay around 500hp to wheels. Here is example of stage 2 upgrade kit (below). You don't think this is more applicable for 600+hp motors or these are just good parts to upgrade with for the abuse the tranny will endure at the track? Thanks,

HD 2nd gear
HD 1/2 synchronizer assembly
8 - Bronze fork pads
Bronze shift stop bushing
2 - 1/2 synchronizer ring packs
2 - 3/4 synchronizer ring packs
2 - 5/6 synchronizer rings
1 - Reverse synchronizer ring
Snap ring kit (4 snap rings)
Front seal
Cluster gear plug
Output shaft seal

Here is my list that I'm ready to buy anyone care to add or delete item?

Exedy Grooved Mach 500 Stage 3 Clutch w/ Hydraulic Throwout Bearing

Ford Performance High Performance Clutch Fluid Line

3.25 in. Carbon Fiber One Piece Driveshaft

That’s a lot of whp.

What is your application? Strip or track? Wide race tires?

Maybe consider Magnum XL before pulling trigger on MT82 upgrades and clutch? Might be cheaper in the short and long run...

And... don’t discount aluminum DS... very durable and fire-proof.

Track only @ 450-500 ish whp...285 squared set-up on tires.

Thanks for your input!

I think good parts to consider while you have everything apart. There are others here with direct experience with these parts and upgrades. Especially what failed in their original tranny. Luckily, I haven't needed to get inside either of my MT82s just yet. I know this is the direction I'd take when that day comes.

Have you priced everything above? If there is not a big difference in cost, I would go with a Magnum XL with an aluminum driveshaft.

Also, unless your transmission builder has proven experience rebuilding and upgrading the MT82 and references to back it up, I would send the transmission to Ben Calimer.

My stage 1 from Ben cost me ~1500$ included all the parts that were trashed when my 3rd gear synchro took a crap and a billet support plate.
Forgot exactly what it's in stage 1 beside bronze fork and shift pad but he has option for ceramic bearings and cryo gear.
Been running it for almost 2 year now. No problems so far.

Get a Exedy Hyper single or twin. I got the twin and it's fine for street driving as long you don't get stuck in traffic.
Install a new OEM slave cylinder and the CobraJet pulse ring too.

New clutch for sure (RST/RXT/Exedy Hyper etc) will help with high rpm shifting and eliminate lockouts. If your transmission is already toast, then definitely go with Calimer or something similar rebuild.

A Magnum XL with driveshaft and speedometer conversion box is about $4,300 looking at current pricing. With a good clutch such as an Exedy Hyper Single, the total price is about $5,500. If this was a heavily tracked car, this is what I would recommend.

But, this is propaply $1,500 or more than what you would spend on a Calimer stage one with the Exedy Hyper Single and Aluminum driveshaft.

The Ford line is overpriced. A braided line will work just as well for about $60. You can get the braided line from JPC and Lethal.

I would not consider the Ford line overpriced. It does not leak like most all of the flexible lines out there. If your going this far, might as well be sure and get a sure thing....

Oh come on it does not take $200+ to make a quality hydraulic clutch line. I've had my $60 JPC for years without issues. It doesn't leak. It hasn't frayed. Its been on and off 3 or 4 times. And its seen higher pressures than most with a Spec 3+ and Exedy 500 clutches.

Seeing your HP and wondering what tires you plan on using and would sure suggest more meat to put down your power --- 305s would be great!! All the mods are cool , but think you need more on the ground to really get it to hook up at the max, imho?

What do you mean by don’t get stuck in traffic?
Heavy effort?
Chatter?
On/off engagement?
I’ve got 29000 on my Boss and the clutch is starting to get heavier.
Lots of track miles so no complaints.
I’ve narrowed it down to a hyper twin or a Dyad.

Why,specifically would you not want to get stuck in traffic with the twin disc?

It's a very on-off clutch, kinda difficult to modulate. I always leave a couple cars from the car in front of me before I take off, just in case.
Also you shouldn't "ride" the clutch too much or you're going to trash the discs pretty quick.

I'm pretty sure it's heavier than the stock clutch but don't remember exactly.
It's fine to go to car&coffee and some Sunday cruise but I wouldn't DD my car with that clutch.
