Can a S197 be competative with a Porsche GT3 Cup car???

A 302S unrestricted can stay close if its a 997. New ones not so much. They are a lot lighter but if you add power and get the power to weight ratio close I’m sure you can.

Memorial day weekend I had a 2018 GT3 in my class. ( less than 1000 miles on It) It was a manual trans. I could not keep up on the straights at all. He pulled away like he had an extra 80 hp(because he did! ) the Rcomp tires and excellent balance the car has allowed him to take corners just as fast as me on slicks. I had to let him by and couldnt keep up. That was an instructor driver who was a good driver. The actual owner was not as fast and I could make up time in the corners but still not on the straights. Those cars are fast. Cup cars: even faster.

Yup, Those Cup ones with the sequential gear box and a big crew of mechanics running around! Positively reeks of excess cash! ,,, at the moment they have a 5 second lead on me (obviously they would be in the Pro class and have mostly pro drivers and I'm way back in the AM class o_O).... So the question was more for the better prepared cars.... And to see if we can get to that state. Will find out on the 23 as we have a event with the Cup cars.... (thank god not at the same time, but same day and track) ... I might have made a snide comment that a well prepared S197 could hang with the Cup cars,,,,,..... that I might be regretting.....

Oddly enough the closest car to the Cups is a 67 Mustang notchback with the full Cortex setup and a monster engine... .He is an average of a second behind them running on square 335 R7's

Oh! by the way, Had a old thread about asking how to beat a Nissan GTR and we did get within one second of a 800hp GTR in all the major tracks in Chile... Didn't beat them but did get close with almost half the hp.... That was with a friends car that was 90% thru the recommended list of improvements... See what happens when you spill your pearls of wisdom!

I think a full bolt on 5.0 could have the power to match the gt3 and with a well sorted suspension I do think the s197 could match the gt3 and if brakes are great, could match a cup car as well. Gotta be a good driver as the cup car is easier to drive at the limit than the s197 is. All it takes is money! Lol

Yes, Depends on drivers and level of prep on both cars.
At our most recent event we were racing against a 997.2 Cup taken straight out of IMSA (owners of the team actually own the track we are racing on). We were faster than them and they were trying to chase our qualifying time and sadly put it into the wall as seen in the end of the video, Luckily driver is ok.

Thats a major hurdle!! $$$ Am half way to getting the LM intake cam, not sure will make it for the Cobrajet intake though... Maybe the s550 15 brakes.... Strapping on some 320/650-18 Conti slicks so maybe I can get close to the slowest of the Cup cars.

I would go with the Cobra Jet over the Cams, will have more gains

Matt doesn't have a race car, his is still street legal.

So Matt, are you referring to a GT3 or GT3 Cup car?

FWIW I was on track with many a 991.1 GT3 in my GT350 which was setup like an R. I could hang with them with me typically out braking them, they would start to pull away at mid corner and were able to get back to full throttle sooner. From about 60-130 MPH the cars were very close in acceleration with the GT3 maybe being a half car length quicker down the front straight at Thunderhill. The 991.1 GT3 RS was definitely faster down the straights and out of the corners.

The new 991.2 GT3 that @Drlee50 posted is as fast or faster than the 991.1 GT3 RS. I drove a 991.1 GT3 RS at the Porsche Experience in L.A. on their 1.5 mile road. I spent 90 minutes in the car and 60 of that on the road course. After I was finished I was impressed with what a surgical scalpel the car was and told my son I could instantly be 3-5 seconds a lap faster at Thunderhill in that car compared to my GT350. The instructor in the RS kept commenting how awesome the CC brakes were in the RS. I kept thinking they feel almost exactly like the brakes in my GT350. I had a track day two days later in my GT350 and I was thinking I would be disappointed after driving the RS. I wasn't and I still feel the brakes are on par with the RS. The Cup car is a lot faster than the street GT3. I was also several seconds a lap faster in my GT350 compared to by Boss 302.

Oh, And I just checked, the GT3 Cup cars down here are retired 991 cars... So maybe its not so out of the question....

About the cams, agreed, its just that will be changing the timing chains and the Oil pump (CJ) soon, so it would be a great time to do the cams ..... If I find a used Cobra jet will jump on it!
