My DIY Oil Cooler Install (a few pics)

Seeing as how I am not made of money, I decided to see if I could beat the Ford price on an Air/Oil Cooler.

Here is my story....

This is the heart, a Setrab 925 oil cooler. Price, $387.08 and $77.77 for the Setrab fittings including shipping

This is 20ft. of Jeg's -10an Pushloc hose. In my case it was about 8-10 ft. too much. Price, $67.99, free shipping.

I have noticed it runs about 5-10 degrees cooler putting the sensor in the pan.

That means I can beat on the car more......
For those of you that have removed the stock low oil sensor, and replaced it with an oil temp sensor, did you end up with a constant red indicator or did you short the connector to prevent the light from illuminating, and if so, how?

I know this is an older thread but I have a question...the sandwich adapter transfers all of the oil through the air/oil cooler and the hole on the one I have that looks just like it has a smallish hole (0.40 inch) in the connectors from the plate to the AN10 lines..does that concern you? Also would drilling a hole in the sandwich plate that allows some oil to skip the cooler overcome this restriction...any thoughts

I have seen plates with small holes and have drilled them out to match the ID of 10AN fittings.

Yes this would concern me. AN-10 hose is 5/8" diameter or 0.625.

Sandwich plates are cheap. I paid less than $25.00 shipped for mine. It is an Ebay special I bought 5 years ago.

You may want to look at plates with a thermostat and bypass. They are a bit more but offer quicker warm up and bypass.

Good luck with your install.

Ok here’s what I did (thanks to all previous posters)..the openings on the inexpensive sandwich adapters looked way too small so I used a Derale non thermostat sandwich plate off of Amazon $50...two 1/2 inch npt/AN10 fittings..Amazon $20..one 4 ft Mishimoto line..you guessed it, Amazon $72, another 5 ft line, Mishimoto, Amazon $78...I had already ordered a 19 stack cooler for about $50 but decided to go with the Mishimoto one the same size..$150...(oddly they looked the same other than the hex fitting on the cheap one was 15/16 and the Mishimoto was 1 inch...I used the Mishimoto one...a universal bracket off of eBay $25..fabbed the lower brackets and that’s about it. The derale adapter is thicker than the other sandwich plate so I had to space the lower stiffening bracket down 3/8 inch to allow for oil filter change (500s)...added an extra quart of 5w50 and all is fine so far.

Cool.

Now get out there and give her a try. LOL.

With a non-thermostat sandwich plate, same here, warm up could take a little longer. Not a problem, just watch oil temp and keep out of the throttle until you are 130-160 degrees.

I've got the exact set up for oil temp into the pan ( using Killer B Adapter )

Remove useless oil level sensor from pan:

Acquire M20 - 1/8 NPT adapter

Attach 1/8" Temp Sensor:

Profit.

One issue I found was routing the wire comes CLOSE to the header so I wrapped it in silver foils from Thermo-Tec

Does this guage light up red / green as indicators for getting hot / engine up to temp?!

I like it a lot!

Posting for posterity. Finally finished with my DIY oil cooler.
Core: Setrab 48-row "Texas sized"
Stock cooler delete? No
Thermostat? No

Haven't track tested yet, but I expect I will see the same result as most of you. The only thing different about my setup that I hadn't seen before is that I used some nifty fittings that moved the oil pressure and temp sensors out to the cooler itself, rather than stuff them in the tight real estate around the sandwich plate. OT is read before the cooler, OP read after. I have had the OP gauge fail before and I like that these are easily accessed for diagnosis. The wiring also goes around the outside of the engine bay and avoids running near the headers. Otherwise, this is mostly the same as everyone else has done.

Huge write-up is at the link. It covers the oil cooler, new grilles, splitter, and tow hook.
