Lower Control Arm Relocation Brackets - Are they SCCA Autocross Legal?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Hey guys! I'm absolutely brand new to both autocross and this forum. In advance, I'm sorry if this thread is in the wrong category. I'm planning to attend this autocross and run my car this September and for the rest of this year.

I currently own a 2013 Mustang 5.0 with Koni yellows, Steeda lowering springs, J&M lower control arms, panhard bar, etc. I'd like to install lower control arm relocation brackets to get some traction back in the rear. The lower control arm currently is not level with the ground because the car is lowered, so I want to fix that problem with the relocation brackets.

My question is, I've heard from multiple forums that SCCA Autocross does not allow relocation brackets on live axle cars for any class (it's just completely forbidden). But these forums were all from 2010-2014. I can't find any information on if SCCA changed that rule and allows these brackets now. I'd like to compete in autocross but I don't want to remove and re-install these brackets every month if SCCA doesn't allow them. Does anyone know if SCCA allows these brackets now?

Thanks for the help!!

join the SCCA, support grassroots racing and get a rule book, until then Mr Pemberton is the current SCCA autocross guru that can help you out. The SCCA is extremely picky about allowable mods, so you are correct to seek some expert advice (which BTW is not me) but there are very good people on this forum that can help you.

This was addressed awhile back (pre-STP days), when members wanted to make common muscle car modifications that weren't addressed in the ST* ruleset (thus not legal)

14.8.G.5 now states:
"The lower arms may be replaced or modified and the lower pickup
points on the rear axle housing may be relocated."

Tl;dr they're legal in STU and above (i.e., ESP, SM/SSM, XP, CP, CAM) :)

Look up the rules for CAMC in SCCA , and Mr. Autocross Support Himself, Dave W. of Soloperformance.com might just pop in and let us know, but dang near anything is okay in that class --- just have to run 200 TWR tires.

Haha thank you guys so much for the help! I'm located in Arizona and I've been waiting for a few days for SCCA Arizona Autocross to approve my forum account to post this question. I need an alignment, but I wanted to install these brackets before I did an alignment so it doesn't mess with the set alignment at all. I'll install these brackets hopefully tomorrow and make my way to the alignment shop.

Appreciate you guys chipping in and helping out with my question, I'm pleased to be a part of this forum!

SCCA autocross rules are at https://www.scca.com/pages/solo-cars-and-rules Street Touring is chapter 14. STU limits you to 11" wide wheels and 285 tires, though there's a proposal to increase to 315 for next year (SCCA members, send your support for proposal #28321 to the SEB!).

STU is the "lowest" class the mods you listed are allowable in, the other classes have more allowances and are faster and more expensive. Tires in ST* are treadwear 200+, and favorites are BFG Rival S 1.5, Bridgestone RE71-R, and Yokohama A052. If you have or are thinking of getting 11" wheels, this late in the season I'd hold off on the rubber until next year to see if the 315's are allowed. Just drive what you've got now; the part with the biggest performance improvement is going to be you. Seat time is everything starting out. The one item you didn't list that I'd consider, mostly to improve tire life, are camber plates for the front suspension, so you can get 2-3 degress negative camber and not grind down the outside edge of the tires.

Ya I was reading that a few weeks ago. I currently am running 19x9.5 with 275/35/19 square setup. So I fit in STU with all of my modifications around the car, from the class guide I followed. Oh awesome, I'll definitely send my proposal for that if I'm able too. I want to get wider wheels in a few years when I know what I'm doing a little more and I feel the money is worth it, and I'd love to stick some 305 or 315s all the way around. I know I'd have to run a spacer for that to clear.

Ya, I'll wait for a few years for wider wheels and tires. I totally agree with the seat time thing, I've heard that time and time again. The next autocross event in AZ is September 20, and I'm really excited to start and finally get on the track with this hobby. I actually have Maximum Motorsports c/c plates that I forgot to list. Going to get an alignment this week. Thanks for the input!!

Massimo:

I see your S197 is lowered, now that you installed your RLCA Relo brkts, how did it perform?
It is lowered. Not crazy far down though, just enough of a drop to give it good handling and a good daily driver experience. After installing the RLCA relo brackets, the car handles a lot better through corners. Before the brackets, putting any kind of throttle down while exiting a corner would have the rear end wanting to walk around the road a lot. After the brackets, giving some throttle on corner exit, the car is super tight and doesn't want to come out at all. Its much more responsive to my inputs and much more confidence inspiring. Definitely worth the work and money!
