Boss 302 tuning - a couple of rookie questions

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

I am new to this tuning work so I have a couple of seemingly simple questions. I have a SCT X4 and received a base tune from AED.
My questions are:
How do I know I saved the stock tune? I was able to download a file that was a .bef file type.
Is there a tune for the Red Track Key and the stock Black Key or is there some other process going on that is sorted out in the stock tune?
Thanks in advance,
Brad

The x4 pulls the stock tune off the car and keeps it. This locks that tuner to that car. It won't allow you to tune any other car until you've loaded the stock tune back on the car.

Always learn something new here! Going to the Dyno soon , so will take the stock tune and secure from my X4 as noted. Thanks would have never thought to do this without some advice from TMO.

Never upgraded to anything with my Boss so I hope I never have to be concerned about these things................................A tune is something you hear in the Spring as the birds sing.................................and I still have that land in Florida to sell you.............................only need a row boat to get there at high tide.........................

The X4 automatically pulls the stock file from the car and saves it internally when you go to flash a new file on.

If the vehicle has a factory tune on the PCM, when you take the handheld tuner to upload a custom file for the first time, it saves that factory tune file to the device. If you already have a custom tune file on the car, and are using the same device to flash an updated file, it just overwrites what is currently on there. The key is really the device, because if you change devices, the first time you flash the car with the new device, no matter what existing file is on the vehicle, it will save that as the "stock tune file".
