Boss quad exhaust replaced.

I just finished swapping out the quad set up from the cats to tailpipes with a MBRP Race Series full 3" two piece kit.Consisting of their H pipe, long mandrel tubes to the straight through 3"core mufflers.I bought their H pipe kit to modify(at a later date) with the factory side pipes. An easy fab and mig job
Fitment is perfect, lots of clearance. They supply a panhard brace spacer.Sound is retro big block deep bass rumble. With Trackey, decel backfires are rarely there, but they are loud.Like alky sprint car decel, but not as loud.Boom! Very cool.Love it!
Anyways, prior to this I bought the Airaid PJ cai, and was a let down. For that amount of money, there was
ziltch improvement. That cai needs other mods down the line to really function, maybe like this.
But I was not expecting the big gains with this swap.Holy .I'm impressed.Big mid range torque and top end.Throttle response and lots more tire spin.Sotp, I can definitely feel it pull harder.Hey, I have built and raced 9 and 10 second cars for 36 years, so I know when a change works or does not.
My BBK ceramic shorties should arrive perhaps today, so after that dreaded job things will again improve.I know is blasphemy to shelf the quad set up, but it just shows there is a lot of room for improvemnt

With your CAI, headers and new exhaust get a tune to maximize the performance.

I know.i have been thinking about a tune.I bought an extended warrantee, good for another 7 1/2 years. Also i would have to ditch the Track- Key.( Track- key install was on the dealership,a freebee.i wouldn't loose sleep over that))Something to think about.I may also try an 85mm t.b. and see if i'm happy with that combo. It would be nice to make 390 to 400 rwhp with no tune.If not,it's AED tune time.

Make sure you confirm it by a tuner first.

Once you load a tune with an SCT scanner it saves the stock tune or track key tune onto the scanner and you can return it back to what it was if needed

I have read threads about the tune that supposedly preserves the trackey tune.I called American Muscle. That fellow told me that, no, I would have to get Ford to remove the program first, and that it would be gone. So, if anyone knows 100% and can direct me to the product-tuner.Also, being were I live-western Canada. That limits accessibility. Our plunging dollar may prohibit such mods anyways, which really sucks.

Thats the big question. Is there a way Ford could check for a tune if I brought the car in for any reason. If it is possible to reload Track key before the scenario? I'm not knowing at this time.Talking to Shaun at AED is what I need to do first. For now, I'm enjoying the car and will soon enough have headers installed.

With computers, anytime a program is removed / changed / modified it will leave a foot print from what I have been told. The question is, how hard is someone (FORD) going to look for that foot print. If its an engine with the block cracked and a piston in your oil pan they may look real hard. Just remember one thing...If your willing to play you have to be willing to pay. Otherwise dont tune it.
Also you have to take in account that posting your mods here is also a foot print. I'm sure ford has people surf the Fourms from time to time.
These are just my thoughts and could be wrong.

Getting a tune would be the last on my list at this time.It makes me a little nervous and I agree. No need to squeeze everything out of it, as it's almost a daily driver..Posting this thread about the exhaust was foremost, as the gains were such an improvement over the stock set up.I went with the H pipe as I dislike the blatty x pipe sound.Maybe a couple horses less, but want a sound I have now!
UPDATE.
The headers arrived today, the 15th.I'll start on the 17th and should be done by Sunday.Oh, joy.

HEADERS.Out of the box,I fired up my die grinder and ported the tube to flanges to smooth out the generous welds that were blocking flow into the primaries.Other than that, the ceramic coating and construction looks very good. They curve around the steering as opposed to running through the tubes'Well I had some free days so I started yesterday around noon, and almost finished today around 4:30 pm.Just a few small things, maybe 2 hours left tomorrow to button it up.I. did it on my back , car on jack stands.I have a lot of scrapes and cuts. This is a big job.Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It'a biznitch to do..The BBK header fitment and clearance is very good. Can't wait to fire it up.

Headers are in.Fitment is awsome. Not any louder than stock.Nice torque pickup.Underhood temps are down, due to ceramic coatings.Big increase in power over stock quad .No chance yet for a banzai run as roads are cold and damp.

Hi Boss-Tang:

Nice report on getting your BBK Silver Ceramic Coated Headers installed. Installing headers while on your back is a big job, but one that I enjoyed doing on my Boss 302 this past July 2015. Definitely a two day job for those of us who are not ASE certified Technicians. And in my case, it was a 3 day job, with the extra day spent in cleaning parts and undercarriage. Also installed a Boss 302 LS splitter and BFR front tow hook.

I too am very pleased with the end result of my Kooks Super Street headers, and the Silver Ceramic Coating was well worth the wait and additional expense. They seemed to wake up my Boss with improved responsiveness from the mid 4K thru mid 6k RPM band. The new tone of my exhaust was most notable as well. Noting, that I kept my Boss side exhaust running open Kooks Boss side pipes.

Good luck with you new exhaust make over and please keep us posted on your performance testing when your weather conditions allow in Western Canada. You'll like the new sound of your TK lopey idle as mine now has a hint of that unique header sound.

In regard to your Tune question, I helped a friend of mine with his late production 2013 GT with Ford Racing TK to install an AED Tune by Shawn useing a XCT X4 Tunner. The X4 first downloads both OEM and TK tunes from the PCM, then loads the selected AED Tune. This hand held device will also data-log, provide real time monitor of many engine operating parameters, like AFR's, temps, timing, etc. After testing for a few hours, the OEM Tune (Silver Key), and the TK tune was reinstalled successfully.

However, like SuperHero mentioned above, the PCM will record Tune activity. I would recommend that not retune if you value your Ford warranty and ESP extended service contract. The X4 is a great device to data-log with a laptop and as a standalone engine monitor device. It will also read CEL codes and perform a crank sensor relearn.

Good luck with your Boss mods,
302 Hi Pro

Thanks mate.Initially it's a bit much, but now that I've done it once, would be a piece of cake. The weather is poor, getting colder and snowing close by.It usually smartens up a bit in January.Looks like a week or two to let it rip.I have an oil change to do this weekend to keep me away from the eats.
Merry Christmas everyone.

Well now I have put some miles on the car, dodging dodgy weather. No leaks! The fit of the BBK's and the MBRP pipes are a perfect match.
I have had the chance to let it rip twice now,and she flies!Great exhaust tone.Thats about it.Last mod was a pair of gas hood struts and a home made heat shield.I will not purchase an aftermarket tune now,as this as far as the engine mods go.I will look forward to the springtime and dry roads,as will most of us.
Cheers!
