Has anyone swap the rear axle of a Boss 302 with a 2008 GT and vice versa?

Maybe: “The 2005-2010 Mustang 7.5" rear end used a 28 spline rear axle, while the 2005-2010 Mustang 8.8" rear end used a 31 spline rear axle. Starting in 2011, both the V6 and 5.0L GT Mustangs were built with a 31 spline 8.8" rear from the factory.”

Check your axle code(s) to ensure both cars have the same 8.8” axle, if so you should be good to go.

@302 Hi Pro Thank you so much for your input. I went under the GT to figure out what kind of axle it is. The gearing is clear 3.31. I google the codes but can`t get the info on what axle it is (7.5 or 8.8). Can somebody help?

@ArizonaBOSS Thank you very much for your input it is highly appreciated. I took the axle out of the GT this morning and if I google the code (3L3-EB) on the differential a bunch of 8.8 stuff comes up, but its all on ebay, so I`m not sure if I can trust it. What exactly is 8.8? Can I measure it? Thanks guys

8.8" is the diameter of the ring gear inside the differential. I suppose you could measure it if you opened the "pumpkin" up but part number searches should be sufficient.

The Ford "8.8 Inch" rearend is in everything from Mustangs to F150s, and supports quite a bit of power. You don't want the 7.5" rearend (or whatever) as that is for the V6 model cars.
You may not have a limited-slip differential in your swapped, rearend, however.

While you have it open I suggest you replace the clutch pack they are known to chatter and stop work as well as a t-lok should. American muscle had a inexpensive t-lok cobra kit for the clutch pack. There is even someone who wrote a review on doing it with out pulling the ring gear out. I did that my self and it took me a while but after cursing a bit got it all back together without pulling ring hear out.

@rasalone Thank you so much for your input. I already have the carbon clutch kit in my cart. The Gt axle will go in the Boss and will be driven on the street only. The Boss axle with the Torsen will be in the Track car (GT). Merry Christmas
