The rumour mill has been saying this new Explorer is going to be RWD/AWD. That gives Ford more options for engine types with a longitudinal layout rather than the cross-ways layout of the current Explorer. As for power, etc, I just picked up a 2018 Explorer Sport with the 365HP Ecoboost 3.5. Even with the older 6 speed transmission, it's great to drive. You have full torque available at pretty much any RPM, so it's always ready to go. I did a long highway drive last week and it was very comfortable and the fuel economy was actually better than the 2015 Explorer Limited with the non-boosted 3.5 V6 that I traded in.
