Some GT4 and FP350S Questions.

I have this love affair with both of these cars and had some questions for the gurus on here.

* I have heard many call the GT4 and the FP350 a Shelby. It seems the Shelby name is rarely used to describe either of them and more specifically a "Ford Performance Vehicle. Shelby or not?

* Is Multimatic the manufacture of the GT4? Meaning if you get an MSO, does it say Ford or Multimatic? It's not a Ford part number like the FP350S right? Does Multimatic just buy a body in white and start from there or does Ford have anything to do with the build process?

* Cross instead of flat plane? You would think with all the hype on the flat plane they would have carried that over to the race cars. Is the old time flat plane technology more of just a novelty in the street engines? Is cross plane still superior due to balancing and over all cost in race applications?

* Are the Forgeline wheel options the same for both cars FP and GT4; the GS1R. Or is there some difference in them. Anyone making a nice replica of those wheels? Would love to find a gently used set as I just can't justify new for my car that may see two to three track days a year. If Apex made something that looked similar I would be all over a set of 18s.

* Why Brembos on the GT4 and APs on the FP350S?

Thanks in advance!

Good questions , but on one I am almost 100% certain, and that is since these are off road vehicles ,without EPA safety and air quality standards, there will be no MSO available. A Manufacturer's Statement of Origin ( often referred to as the Original Title in Layman terms ) won't come with the car , as it will not have the ability to be titled. This is exactly the case of the Boss 302S , for example.

It may not be specifically an MSO; when you buy a SxS or a boat they all have some sort of paperwork that accompanies them showing when, where and who it was manufactured by right? All off road vehicles have some sort of title, mso or vin. Just curious what the GT4 shows as a manufacture.

Not necessarily the case -- no Vins on Boss 302S , no title, only parts dept. paperwork. Cars can have different situations due to Manufacturer requirements and imagine these cars are classified as a body in white. Not a boat or recreational vehicle, they have to meet government crash standards, air quality standards, air bag issue, and more. Hence they can not have a legal title/MSO , and if you see the Vin plate on a Boss 302S , it will likely read something like Boss302s016 ( not the typical 17 letter/number sequence) to designate it's build out of a specified number.

Hope this explains the situation better?

I'll take a crack at this.

1 * I think of a Shelby as a car made by Shelby America. Neither of these cars are made by them or have Shelby in the name. FWIW I never referred to my GT350 as a Shelby. You can go to the Ford Performance Parts website and find the info. I'd post the links but their website seems to be down at the moment. Here's one from Multimatic

2* I have no idea on the MSO but @treynor owns one and can possibly comment on what documentation comes with the car. Watson Racing is involved in the build process of a GT4. I believe Multimatic ships the BIW to Watson where they install the full roll cage and modify the car for the air jacks and oil sump tank. There are a couple of other minor mods but I don't remember what they are. I did ask if there were any mods to the trans tunnel for the Hollinger and was told no.

3* The race cars moved from a FPC to CPC after one year of racing. You make your own conclusions...

4* The Forgeline wheels are GS1R wheels and I believe they are the same although the offsets could be different but I don't think so. The closest @APEXRaceParts makes to those wheels is the SM-10.

5* The AP brakes are a better value (less expensive) than the Brembos and are supposed to work at least as well as the Brembos on the GT4. ;) The GT4 homologation process was with the Brembos so don't look for that to change.

I wonder how the GT4 or even the FP350S would do on the Eboladrome on the TV show The Grand Tour. I was watching a few episodes with my mother and father this week why they were visiting and my dad asked. I would be curious to see how a GT4 does against some of the cars on that list.

.

Funny in few videos on various Ford and race sites, they call it a Shelby, others it's a Ford Performance part number. haha!

I think it is just too cool you could order an FP right from the catalog.

The wheels are particular to each vehicle in the sense that "GT4" and "FP350S" are machined in the wheel lip, but offsets as mentioned earlier may be different.

As I heard, using a flat plane crank without all the street car's usual NVH reduction measures and using race parts that do not have the softness of rubber resulted in headers constantly cracking from vibration. Ford just can't get it as right as, for example, Ferrari the first time around, IMHO.

Since it was brought up. Ford bought the rights to Shelby years ago, back in the late 60's if I read correct. I was not old enough to IIRC (LOL).

Shelby America (GT350, Raptors, Dodge Dakota, That little car I can't remember) is built by Shelby America in Vegas and you supply car just like Ford did to Shelby back in the 60's and they can basically do what they want with it sort of like Roush or Hennessy, etc.

But back on subject: I can tell you the GT4 car is mostly carbon fiber, built my Multimatic and Watson in conjunction. As far as the MSO, I believe its just a receipt for a BIW, but I could be wrong and Im good at that.

BTW- Is the Fernly track still open? Im too lazy to inter web search.

When I was ordering my wheels from an after market wheel company they acquired the wheel spec from Ford Racing school to fit on their FP350S:
18*11 et 18
18*11 et 56
It seems to be the spec on FP350S but in order to fit 18 inch wheel you need to do the AP racing brakes first. They fit perfectly on my car with 305/660/18 front and 305/685/18 rear continental G5000 slicks

KohR motorsports bas both GT4 and FP350S GS1R for sale on their website and you can call them to find out the difference.
