2012 Boss 302 Sport Mode "Issue" at Sebring

Hello, everyone - Participated in SCCA TNIA at Sebring yesterday in my 2012 Boss 302. It has coilovers and a Watt's link and I am running 275/40-18s on 18x10 inch wheels. AT Sebring, turns 5-7 are a long sweeping right hand turn (7 being the hairpin). I engage the Advancetrac Sport Mode when on track. When I apply full throttle through this sweeping turn the stability control jumps in two or three times. I do not understand why as this is not a tight corner. I experimented a coupe of times by applying 7/10 or 8/10 throttle and it still jumped in. It only happens on this section of the track. I welcome any and all feedback and thoughts. Thanks!

If AT is stepping in, it's sensing yaw and doing what it feels is "best" to manage it.

From my own experience with my 2012 Boss, I leave AdvanceTrac disabled whenever I go out on track. IMO, it's intrusive. I'm well versed in dealing with a RWD car that steps out, and will handle it accordingly. Having over a decade of experience racing a 1985 Mustang GT in NASA's CMC class teaches a driver to steer with the right foot. :)

The one time I drove with AT enabled on track (CVR here in SoCal), I found that as I was counter-steering/using throttle to manage the rear end, AT intervened at all the wrong moments and made the situation worse.

For a new(er/ish) driver, I could see it being a benefit. For an experienced driver, not so much.

I'd really love to have AT disabled ALL the time.

Just for clarity - you can turn off AdvanceTrac by pressing and holding the traction control button for approx 10 seconds. With seat time (and stickier tires), you’ll eventually start having random AT issues again - that’s when the Boss 302S ABS module is the ultimate fix.

Remember that a good tuner can remove Advancetrac and stopping it coming back automatically by itself for very little $$. That can happen when the computer decides that your "distressing" your car, or in other words, a fast lap.

Like Adam, and 67GTA I shut everything off as I find it intrusive in both tight and sweeping corners. I only experienced twice because of a Senior moment , where hurrying to get to grid I forgot to shut everything off. My personal feeling, like Adam's , is with plenty of time in cars like Vipers I find the Mustang steps out only a little and is very telegraphic. Diving into a tight corner and having the stability management kick in made me go straight to the pits thinking I had a hub going bad. I always was appreciative Ford allowed one to shut things off, because I often think nannies give one a false sense of security.

@Stickboy I agree with others here about the limitations of AT but your experience seems excessive to me. In my experience, AT shouldn't be kicking in with the system in sport mode under the conditions you describe. I suspect you have an issue with the system. Obvious question, have you checked and cleaned the ABS sensors and trigger wheels at all four wheels? Especially in the rear, a failing axle seal will spill oil and collect dirt all over the sensor and trigger wheel. I might also consider trying a new set of ABS sensors if cleaning them doesn't help.

Also, I'm curious but don't know if the yaw sensor can go bad. It's apparently part of the airbag/restraint control module located under the center console. This is an interesting thread on some other options if you decide to deactivate the system completely: https://trackmustangsonline.com/thr...ng-the-abs-fuse-anyone-actually-try-it.17445/

Thank you all for the replies and advice! I will have the sensors and system looked at and will also research the 302S ABS module. Honestly speaking, I am not yet at the level where I would shut everything off and trust myself. Heck, I am only running 2:40 at Sebring!

The fact that you are learning on 275's is a good idea. Your driving and car control will improve faster with a less grippy tire. No point getting the best rubber possible right away as it can get you into trouble. Better to push your limit with car control skills at lower speeds! You can also use the traction control as a overzealous nanny. Try going as smooth as you can with out invoking the controls to kick in (not that fun though...).
