2013 Boss Review

I had the opportunity to view and ask several questions about the 2013 Boss 302. Since the car club had a private showing, they opened up the vehicle and even allowed it to run briefly.

Here is that I was told through Ford and its presenter. Most of the information will be what many already know but just in case some may not. Obviously the nose and rear end of the body has been changed. The new front end and grille offer a more aggressive look with the increased airflow reducing over heating issues.

The fog light section of the grille can be removed using a screwdriver during track use and screwed back in when necessary. The grille is of the honeycomb design seen in the Shelby GT500.

Moving back towards the rear of the car......the driver and passenger side mirror are now heated and come with what's called a "puddle light." The puddle light come on either when the doors are unlocked using the key remote or when the doors are opened. The light shined down to the ground is in the shape of the Mustang pony.

New LED lights have been added to the redesigned tail section of the car. An outline of the brake lights is what's LED. Rear spoiler is the same as the small spoiler in 2012. Tires and rims remain unchanged.....the lower rocker panels are now color matching, not the standard black as the 2012.

Under the hood has no change. LED headlights, and the redesigned hood to fit the extended nose cone. The vents seen on the hood are heat extractors and are 100% functional.

Ford at this mornings showing, did not have a tech specialist on hand so those questions will be asked later this weekend when I return to the Expo. I will see what they can tell me. I will also try and post photos soon, just have to find time here at work to get them onto photobucket.

Hope this little write up shines some light on a few questions.

Yeah, the heated mirrors are an unusual choice ;)

Would have rather seen the self dimming rear view mirror with the garage door opener on it!

Exactly! Would have saved me $450 apiece on all three of my Mustangs! No good reason at all for the heated mirrors since most people would NEVER need them and if you did have to replace one (damage) it probably costs 3 times as much!

The heated mirrors and puddle lights come standard on all base GT's so now they are included on the Boss. Same with SYNC and HID's.

The Homelink opener would have been nice either in the mirror or the sunshade. Much more usable than pony shaped puddle lights. ::)

My 2012 Premium GT has a Homelink opener in the driver visor, so I would imagine that since the 2013 Boss is based on a Premium GT now it will have one also.

I'm pretty sure the Boss is based on a base GT not the premium.

Someone posted something here from their order that said it was optioned on top of a GT premium.

Actually it seems that the Boss 302 is its own trim level not optioned on top of the GT at all; however, the Boss standard features more or less align more closely with those of the base GT than with the GT Premium. E.g., no Shaker, no leather, no power seats, no ambient lighting, no Homelink, etc.

It looks like the Boss has some Premium features but not all- just enough to satisfy more of the creature-comfort people. Sync is a great addition for 2013 but having had it for a while the phone part of it is not so great in a Mustang. Everyone has a hard time hearing me talk if I am driving. It is probably worse in a Boss if they are still putting less sound deadening material in it.

The full MyFord or whatever it is called in the Expoder is HORRIBLE. Two of my bros have them (taking advantage of the special tax break for 2011) and it is so bad it makes you wonder how they even let it into production. Not the crappy interface, but the way it crashes, loses ability to read the memory card with the maps, and laaaaaags constantly. I heard Sync by itself is better, but just having plain bluetooth would be just dandy for me. I got a cell phone ticket last year and I wasn't on the phone, it was in my pocket actually, but you can't really win fighting them. Though not having bluetooth is an excuse to not pick up the phone lol

Cali- How do you get a ticket with your phone in your pocket? DId they see you singing and assume you were talking? :) It seems the cell phone charges would be easy to prove with a billing. We don't have that law here (yet) so I was just wondering, not that I don't think there should be something.

Now if they can pass a law about the women I see styling and putting on hairspray, eating bowl of cereal, or doing eyeliner in the rearview mirror on the morning drive to work.....

How did you know about the singing?

I did a quick google search on it and people said bringing in your bill doesn't work. They can always say you had your phone in your hand so you must have been on the internet or something. He also said they were cracking down on distracted drivers for some awareness project. When I said I wasn't on the phone, the he responded that it is illegal to even have the phone in your hand, and that it is illegal to dial while driving. Both are wrong, as per the CA DMV, highway patrol, and analysis of the vehicle code. When I said it was in my pocket, and pointed to my pocket, he said he saw it out and I must have just put it away when he pulled me over. They also gave my bro a ticket once because he was driving with a radio tube in his hand and they assumed it was a phone. We basically consider bogus phone tickets part of the local tax system.

Sorry to go so far off topic, but it still pisses me off. I have nothing against cops in general, heck I almost became one before I busted my knee, but the Mountain View police department is abusing the cell phone ban.

That is what I have- just Sync and no NAV. It is nice just getting in your car and the phone connects automatically once you pair it. Another feature I like for music is that you can just hook up a thumb drive or SD card reader to the USB port in the center console and the stereo can read MP3's right off of it.

I would rather buy a top-of-the-line portable GPS for a third of the price of the electronics package. Technology changes too fast to buy something permanent in your vehicle.

I saw some chick texting while on a yield turn yesterday as I rolled throught a 4-way stop. I honked at her to get her attention. I hate that. Another one was too busy flapping her gums on the phone to take her turn to go, but it was not as bad as the texter. Texting takes your attention completely off the road.

I simply put aside (mentally) what the other drivers are doing (as you have described) and use safe driving habits. Once one gets emotionally involved, other things seem to happen.

I have a pic of a local cop eating, typing on the laptop and driving at the same time. I also have one of a cop using the laptop and talking on a phone at the same time. I'm making an album to go along with my collection of pics of multiple city employees sitting around while one guy is digging a hole.

So the club I belong to got an email from Ford who states there will be a total of 3,370 2013 Boss 302's built. 2,713 regular and 657 LS 302's.
