2013 New Stripes Issues... Thoughts?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Had a minor fender hood repair and the driver fender stripes and hood stripes had to be replaced.

Stripes were installed by a specialist that only does striping for most dealerships in San Antonio area for the last 20 years.

Paint was cured for three days before installation of stripes.

The center stripe from top to bottom is like alligator skin. Small sections on the other stripes are the same. Stripe guy thought a few days in the Texas heat would solve the issue as it bubbled up close after install.

After a few days it got worse. Installer says he's never seen a stripe do this ever. They pulled to see if there was any solvent or anything in the bubbles, nothing. No off gassing or anything from the paint.

Pics sent to Ford and they are going to warranty it. Their suggestion was to install and keep out of the heat for a few days with a fan on the car. Just a suggestion, not an actual recommended practice.

My fear is if it happens again Ford won't warranty it. And these stripes are uber expensive.

Car goes in tomorrow to hand remove the stripes as the paint is still too new. To do this and reprep the hood will take close to a day. Install stripes Thursday morning when it's the coolest. Problem is I was going to Dallas for the weekend and wanted to take the Boss.

Has anyone had new stripes on a 13 installed on a repaint? Any issues? Any other ideas to the cause?

They're certain the paint isn't still outgassing after 3 days? It certainly looks like it is.

I'm no expert on paint or stripes but this seems like the probable cause to me. I'd let the paint cure for weeks, not days, before re-installing the stripes. It certainly couldn't do any harm.

I just got my 2013 SBY out of the shop two weeks ago for a ding in the passenger door. They had to blend the paint to the front and rear quarter panel to get it right. My original estimate was $938,but that was with only the stripe for the door. Turned out they needed the only the very small piece on the very top of the fender, but had to order the whole right side of tape which brought my total to $2039!All that for a 3 inch dent! Striping total alone was about $1100. But anyway, the paint a strips came out perfect. No problems at all. Told me to wait two months before waxing. By the way, I talked to the people just today at 3M about how to care for the stripes. I was told to use only Maguires Natural Shine Protectant. Found it at Advance Auto for about 7 bucks. Applied it this afternoon and they turned out awesome. Took out the few water spots and gave them a brand new shine to them. Gonna put another layer on tomorrow.

I had some body work done on my Boss and I told the shop to let the paint cure for 2 weeks. Then I went back and had the stripes applied. I had no issues by doing that. IMO you should always let paint cure for more that 3 days.

That's what it looks like but there would be some residue if it did. Weird part is why it did not do it fully on the thin stripes and the fender stripes.

Well the car was painted 8/1 and stripes will be applied again tomorrow 8/15 so it has been two weeks. We shall see.

Thanks for the feedback and insight on the stripe care and polish. Will check that out. Yes, these stripes are expensive! Close to $2000 for mine.

Hindsight is 20/20, I would have been better of order a Tiger Racing hood and eliminating the hood stripes all together.

Keep that in mind if anyone ever has to have a hood repair on a 2013.

I've had the same issue. When I arrived to pick it up, it was like what Darth Boss said, 'alligator skin', spent another hour at the dealer for them to try to get the bubbles out, but no luck. So I returned home, ordered a new piece, scheduled, and took it back for application, same thing. This was definitely over a month later. So, right after that I was to be shipped off to here (Republic of Georgia) for the next 6 months. When I return I plan on calling someone at Ford, preferably someone at the mod center who convert the GTs to the BOSS. I can check with Deysha also. The decals/stripes are not cheap, 220 for the passenger doors two piece and 109 for the right rear quarter piece. luckily i was reimbursed from the Ins. Co and the dealer who painted the car.

Thanks for the feedback. Any pics or claim number I can reference if necessary? Now I'm getting more worried.

Body shop reviewed with Ford and they even think based on the build sheet of my car the paint and process used was same as factory. Food for thought.

Looks like a defective stripe,I would say it was the solvent coming out of the paint but the small stripe is okay.Looks like the glue on the stripe was not applied uniformly to the sticker.

Happy ending. Stripes came out flawless. Will see after a day in the Texas heat. Some minor scratches in the paint that need to be buffed out and my baby is back to 100%.

I'll post pics this weekend of the few mods I had done while in the shop.

1. Boss T-Springs
2. CDC upper grille
3. Roush High Flow lower grille
4. American Muscle retractable plate now that my Craig's bracket is no longer compatible.
