I'm going to regret asking this but what do you do with your hands if you're not driving?

I think I'll wait for the transporter to come along. (That's me in the future, front-left)

That is driver error not Tesla’s fault. The technology is designed to be used with your hands on the wheel and the driver did not have his hands on the wheel.

    Legally correct, likely.

Why is the system there? To assist? Then why does it take full control while the driver monitors? Sounds more like the driver assists the system, right up to a few seconds before a possible law suite.

Not quite ready for prime time.

Systems like this should be 'idiot proof'. The dead driver was an idiot. Why didn't the car know the hand(s) weren't on the wheel?

Fault is tricky in our legal system. I'd bet they would or could be found some percentage at fault in a civil case.

Musk is pressing his vendors for cost downs in a tyme of all kinds of import tariffs. Not only have all my suppliers had 5-10% increases over the past six months but this 25% tariff from China is driving cost up. Not sure how Tesla can push for lower cost on parts. His push is that of a man feeling shareholder pressure for profits. His wishes are going to be a tall ladder to climb.

And that's exactly why we shouldn't have autonomous or semi-autonomous or assist systems at cruising speed.

If a driver takes his hands off and survives a crash, they should be charged with some form of reckless endangerment. Make it a felony or worse.

I've said it before and I'll say it again my wife and I do not feel like being beta testers with this system. We've still tried it out of curiosity but don't use it to drive the car. Tesla has stated this is not a fully autonomous system. If you think it is there could be dire consequences. Now the enhanced cruise control is a different story and we use it all of the time especially in heavy traffic.

The car did know the driver did not have their hands on the wheel as stated in the article. The car warns you when it detects your hands aren't on the wheel and will disengage after a couple of warnings. And I agree, if you're not using the system properly and cause harm to others you should be responsible and are. It's no different than driving any other car in that respect.

It's easy to point to a specific instance and say they aren't safe but a better way to do that is to go by accidents/deaths per million miles like the government does. I'd bet a Tesla with enhanced autopilot (note they don't call if self driving) is just as safe as any other vehicle on the road and my bet is it's safer.
