Black smoke at WOT?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

So I went for a cruise with a friend today, and he tells me that any time I was running WOT and hit the higher rpm range, a puff of black smoke would come out of my exhaust. I was driving with the red key when this happened. I switched to the grey key it no longer happens. Anybody else experience this? I know the red key makes the tune more aggressive but I've never had anyone notice smoke before.

Puff of smoke at WOT is usually detonation. It would probably be safe to splash 5 gallons of race fuel into the car as cheap insurance if you are going to be going all-out.

Off topic: where do you find unleaded race gas in AZ? the Loves by wild horse pass have leaded race gas on pump.

That's where I get mine. The 100 is UL and the 110 is Leaded.

Depending on what part of the valley you are in, Tom's Thumb in Scottsdale has 100 UL on the pump, as well.

^This. Down to 4 or even 3.5 gal per tank might be enough if you are really being cheap and depending on the quality of the gas you're starting with. Here in CA, I tend to be safer with crappy 'winter blend' 91 vs. summer blend.

ahh. I went to the loves twice, and saw the 110 leaded and said "screw that"...never looked at the pumps for any other fuel.

I work down the street from there, think ill throw in a few gallons of 100 to mix the 91 into a 93+ just for the hell of it.

Thanks!
