The rumor that the Boss name was returning existed for the S550 and S650, but this article feels different for some reason. I absolutely hate the idea that the 'Boss' name could be used on a Maverick or Mach-E to designate a performance package, but it seems like selling out all of a company's history is the name of the game these days...BMW M-Division and Mercedes AMG line have all slapped their names on any part that might boost sales.

Hopefully, it is simply a renewal of the patent on the name and design

I doubt they'd be stupid enough to put it on a MACH-e. I'm hoping to see a winding down of all of the electrification too now with the mandates gone... I could see it on a Bronco but... I doubt it. They've got the Dark Horse now so adding a BOSS seems like an overcrowded field. Maybe they're just in the development stages? I think the 2012 was in development for 4 or 5 years wasn't it?

Hopefully they come to their senses and unlock tuning, go back to traditional gauges and remove auto start-stop!

I'd guess that a modern BOSS would be like a MACH 1 with some power upgrades?

Mustang Boss 302, 351 or 429 would be fine, just get rid of the horrid dash and put the thing on a diet!
Diet I agree with, but what's wrong with the dash? Flat panels are going in everything these days, it's just the way of the world. Even my Mav pickup has one.
The good thing about the panels is if you don't like what it's showing, you just change to another style of dash. I like a traditional dash with 2 big dials for speedo and tach, but on track a simple bar showing red line is better. With this setup I can have whatever I want whenever I want it, both in my Dark Horse and my truck. Hard to beat that.

Bottom line...............A savvy buyer will know the difference between a clever ad promotion and the real deal....if not, He gets what he falls for...........My Boss was/is the real deal, that's for sure!!!!

Just don't like flat panel displays, its more about the controls for HVAC, radio, etcetera, don't need to take my eyes off the road. In AZ it appears that running stop signs is a popular past time. Keep your head on a swivel.

I dove through the actual link to the trademark gov website and the page helpfully lists the related past case IDs for the currently-viewed trademark. It seems that Ford applies for a renewal of the BOSS trademark every decade or so, 1993, 2004, etc, which would match up with this timing. There could be something there, or it could be online publications looking for anything to drive engagement...

They applied for specifically "BOSS 302" for the 2010+ race program and the 2012-2013 cars.

Jeez, sounds kind of like a 'vette forum. Every time GM makes any change to the car the old guys go ballistic. Many of them think the C8 isn't a Corvette at all. Meanwhile, the reality is that the C8 is way better than the previous cars, especially with respect to ergonomics and comfort.
My main beef with the flat panels is the complexity of them, you can have virtually any layout you want, as long as you persist in trying to find exactly what you want. And that can be daunting for an old, tired brain.
Would I prefer to go back to the old style dash with analog gauges? Damn right I would! But it ain't going to happen so I'm just trying to figure out this new tech and make it work for me.
And trust me when I say this, if I can figure it out then anyone can.

Progress is PROGRESS..............New ones will love it....................Old dogs will get used to it..............eventually...................I'm talkin from experience here, BTW, as an OLD DOG......

I’m hopeful that physical buttons that need to be pressed will make a comeback.
This. With dedicated real knobs and switches you could control things without having to take your eyes off the road. With flat panel touchscreens controlling everything, you have to point & swipe through 3 levels of submenus just to turn the HVAC fan up a notch, and you're concentrating on the screen instead of the traffic.

I have to agree with Dave_W, xr7, and JDee. As JDee noted change causes folks to go a bit crazy concerning things they don't like -- I like change as it means innovation and progress. That said I also agree with Dave and xr7 on the dash as it loses the tactile feel I think many of us see as fairly necessary for spirited driving. The Tesla dash was a concession for the younger buyer who was born viewing screens, and there are only so many years those of us in our 60s, 70s, and 80s will be buying vehicles, ha. I hate the look, I miss the toggles , the switches, the knobs and it was my choice not to purchase a Darkhorse due to this design. Sure, it sounds like I am talking out of both sides of my mouth, but it is just the recognition that as we move forward with all things automotive we will not always get what we want and that is logical since various items are more important to the multitude of buyers. We do have choice and with the Challenger and Camaro gone, Ford does need to sit back and contemplate what they have not done correctly , with Sales down when there isn't even any direct competition. Marketing wise this is a wake up call and bringing back the " Boss " name makes plenty of sense. Lighten the car up, drop the price, and make it the middle range Mustang between a basic Stang and the Darkhorse. History shows that names like Boss, Hemi, SS, Z06, Cobra, etc. reignite nostalgia and are names that often create some excitement on their own, so bringing it back again makes sense, and I just hope they get the car right, as a lighter weight track focused machine could easily fill in a spot even cause some folks who hate the dash to ...........reconsider, ha!

Hell yeah, lighten it up by about 3-400 lbs and I am for sure a buyer!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing wrong with a digital dash, if it's IN the dash, not poking over top of it.
