You can remove it but you need to make sure that you keep some type of spark arrestor on the gas tank vent line.
if you are going to open up the vent line that goes up to the engine compartment make sure that you remove all of it and cap off at the intake. You don't want to have the valve in the engine compartment open up (electrically) and put gas fumes from the gas tank into the engine compartment especially since the valve is right next to the exhaust manifold on the driver's side.
