Check Your GT350 Oil Filter!

There was an incident at a recent track day in Colorado where it was confirmed that an oil filter came loose on track. The owner had recently had the oil changed and the oil filter O Ring was "partially blown out". To me that sounds like the filter may not have been installed correctly. The special oil filters for the GT350 have thread locker in the threads and has a higher torque value than a typical oil filter. Hopefully someone will confirm this but I believe it's 18 ft lbs. If you're not changing the filter yourself I'd make sure the person doing the work knows how critical proper installation is. Oh and remind them that it takes 10 quarts of oil. I know that one from first hand experience. ::)

16-18 ft lbs. That's way more than the S197/ Hand tight and needs a torque wrench. I've changed mine twice and have had zero issues with 7 track days.
Dealer told me torque spec was actually printed right on the filter. I had them dump the oil while installing the camber plates so haven't changed it myself yet to look at the filter.

Correct it is 16-18 ft lbs. But being a mechanic myself I've seen incidents where the old gasket will come off the oil filter and still be stuck to the filter gasket surface on the engine. If this happens the new filter will not seal and oil will blow everywhere. Always check to make sure the old gasket is removed before installing the new filter.

I just changed my oil last weekend for the first time. Dang, the filter was nearly impossible to get loose. During the process I almost destroyed it. A lot of foul language involved. Is there a special filter wrench I should get?
In addition, I was really surprised at the twist off plastic drain plug. I found nothing in the owners manual regarding removal and re-installation of this thing. Is anyone else worried about this thing
getting loose and possibly falling out? Perhaps I worry too much. I may be living in the past but I sure like a metal plug in with a washer that screws into a a metal pan with torque specs. Would love to hear from you folks that do your own oil changes.

I bought this wrench:

The external magnets are an interesting idea. Which one did you order? Will the SS300PR fit?

Here's another option:

Thanks for the info and I may order the oil filter removal tool and magnets. Before removing the original filter I did take my new filter to the parts store and bought a filter wrench that fit pretty snug to the bottom of the new oil filter. It wouldn't budge the filter on the car. It simply slipped around the bottom of the filter doing no good.
Does anyone actually use a torque wrench when tightening the new filter?
Also, the drain plug sure seemed kinda wiggly when it was tightened causing concern.
I wonder how often the seal on the plug should be replaced?
Maybe I worry too much about stuff.

This exact same thing just happened to one of the GT350's at the Track Attack. Driver was at speed but managed to get off the track after spewing quite a bit of oil on the tarmac. This was yesterday. I went back to the track today to talk to the management there about a couple of things and I saw the car parked near the garages with the front end up in the air. Oil had sprayed the undercarriage pretty good. The staff there confirmed that the filter had come loose and then the seal or o-ring blew out.

Great info here. I'm getting close to changing my oil and filter so will get these products for when I do. Thanks much. :)

I'm not too worried about the composite drain plug but I'm with you that I'd prefer a metal one with a magnet. I wonder if they could have used a metal insert for a metal drain plug?

I'm going to be doing my own oil change soon and was wondering if there are any tricks to getting the drain plug out or reinstalling it? Thanks.

You can almost screw it out with your fingers it's so easy to remove. Just use a 3/8 drive with an extension and it comes right out...be ready though because those 10 quarts come out fast. Doing an oil change in the is car is a breeze. Make sure you have an oil filter socket and a torque wrench. I bought the oil filter socket on Amazon.
