Just picked up a set of new Conti G6500 slicks in size 305/650/18 for $175 each from Hoosier. I had decided to stick with new DOT's in 315 width just for consistency but I couldn't pass this deal up. I guess with the end of the season they have some nice deals to offer. Seems there are lots of sizes and compounds. Take a look.

The sale tires are a great deal! ..... But the lap times are considerably off a R7... Great fun or practice tire. I would not get them if your after a trophy.

Tried the earlier contis and the P2000.... Found that they lasted less then a R7 and were about 2 seconds slower in both cases.. Maybe the G6500 is better? Have not tried them. But not going to based on past results.

In one case a Full Cortex setup on a 67 mustang was 2 seconds faster on 315/30-18 R7 then on 320-650-18 P2000's

My Boss was a full second faster on 295/30-18 R7s then on 320/650-18 P2000's.... An thats after a ton of engine and suspension upgrades.

Went through three sets in 12 hours of track time... In the end, would have been better off with the R7 in terms of $$ and results

Yeah I was going down the same road and sticking with a 315 DOT like the A7/R7 or R1S but $700 for brand new slicks was too good to pass. I just run for fun so if I get a 3 or 4 track days out of them it's worth it.

what made you decide to go with the 650 vs the 680? 680 is way closer to a 27" tire

Maybe @ajaquilante has some news?... I seem to remember him saying that the last Conti was decent? Before they lost out to Michelin......

The G6500 was the WeatherTech GTD/GT3 class front tire for rear-engine cars. As far as I'm concerned it will be just fine on any axle I use it on :D

I like the response I get from the smaller sidewall. I ran a Pirelli 680 and didn't like how it felt. I'm dropping down to a 3:31 ratio anyway so I'm not worried about the diameter change as much.

+1. If you want some tires for fun that won't break the bank, these are a good go-to. But you also have to figure out the tires. If you're planning to compete, look elsewhere.

I ran the 305/680/18 G5000, they were big and slow. I would guess 1-2 seconds slower than Pirelli 305 of "same" size. Measured width of the Conti is more like a 320 than 305, too big for S197 wheelwells. Evidence of rub on both inside and out of tread edges of the same tire (Meaning offset was optimized). I figure for the price, I'd give it a whirl. Be sure to read the Conti tread and section width measurements. A 680 OD tire with 11.5" tread on Apex 18"x11" w 20mm spacer is max width w/o touching the sheet metal.

Madhatter: What hot tire pressures did you run on your P2000 Continental slicks that worked best for you? I normally run the Hoosier R7 and know the hot temps that work on my 2007 Mustang (race weight is 3800 lb with me in it) but a little heads up on your experience with the P2000 hot tire pressures would help me get started..

Did not notice anyone having issues with the Contis rubbing, as we have had quite a few guys try them in our area, but then I noted you said you ran the 680s. Those are quite tall and most ran the 645 or 660s , so the concern may just be with the taller tire - just an educated guess?
Alternative for folks is there should be some Pirellis coming out now at usedracingtires.com ?

There is another guy in Wisconsin many Midwestern guys use, also, but I have forgotten his name , so someone pop in and let us know his name also?

Hi Zajac, I have to admit the P2000 are a big step down from the R7's. Pressures vary with the temps as when its cooler its really hard to get them to warm up. I was using between 32 to 34 psi With the car at 3650 lbs with me in it. Once when it was about 12 C went down to 22 psi but could not get them even warm.

On a 2.7km Track the P2000 are at least 1.5 seconds slower then the Hoosiers. I think they are a good (cheap) practice tire but not really for competition. they also don't last long... I would say that they have roughly 50% of the useful life of a Hoosier...

the long and the short of it is.... I regret wasting money on them!!! Hope you have better results!!

And sorry for being so negative!

Madhatter is a fairly competitive guy if you have read many of his interesting posts, but he is also very circumspect and honest, and that is what many of us like about him. He even apologizes for being negative, but he really is just being open and candid with you. As many of us have noted, these are fantastic tires for someone who wants to go out and do HPDEs or just Track Time, but if actual racing or Time Trials is in you DNA , the low price is going to have to match low expectations. He kindly states they are at least 1.5 seconds slower than an R7, and that is being pretty generous as I would have stated over 2 seconds per lap on a 2 mile course ----- that was what many of us saw a few years back at the Mustang Roundup. Some folks picked up CCs ( cheap Continentals ) even lower since a couple of us sold ours after only one or two sessions. If you are out just to get seat time, or just having fun, they are great for that. I too have to state I regretted spending the money, though.

The key , to this continuing Conti conversation is the tires sold to newcomers and guys who wanted them just for fun track time, all loved the grip over some of their OEM and skinnier tires.

Bill, we all know SBY is THE color to have even if some won't admit their mistakes. I won't be using those BFG's until the first weekend in June at the Weatherly Hillclimb so I will fill you in on how they work. I have been staring at them lovingly for months. Haven't been there in about 25 years so it will be a blast running up that hill again. But I was much younger and fearless back then so those big sticky tires should help.
