Electric Turbos Are Coming!

This is an interesting article on the use of an electric turbo that spools up almost instantly and will be used in conjunction with a traditional turbo. I can't imagine Ford isn't already all over this technology.

Audi, Schmaudi! I've been able to buy one on Ebay for years--and for only 70 bucks!

This is something I have been thinking about for a while now. Definitely less complex to install if you can get all of the power you need from just an electric turbo instead of having both with the electric as a supplemental. But this means more people will be buying the BS electric fan "turbos" on eBay once they hear about it... They are just PC fans yet people buy into it... Just like the "performance chips" that are no more than a resistor in a box to screw with your MAF readings.

I think NFSBOSS is talking about motors that actually assist turbochargers in spool up during those low revs, eliminating conventional turbo lag due to lack of boost. NFSBOSS I think BMW also was designing a similar system about 2 years ago. Great idea in the pursuit of having a RWD turbo car accelerate like a RWD NA car. I am also seeing a shift to 4WD though, so this may be unnecessary when you have power being put down so efficiently at all 4 corners ie Nissan GTR.

Yes I know it's just aiding the typical turbo. I do think you could get a completely electric turbo to work, though. But you will definitely need a lot of power for any significant pressure. Maybe just to equalize and maybe get 1lb of pressure in the intake would be enough to help efficiency. Air flows better when it is pushed.

I hate Audi, but you got to hand it to them they're on their "A" game on this stuff. funny thing it used to be Chrysler and Ford aerospace in the 60s...another advantage the US has hosed away.

Watch this. I'm sure Ford is involved somehow. :)

That was very cool, cheap, very effective and uses known technogie instead of looking for rocket science solutions.
