Engines bare aluminum finish

Hi,
Just curious, what can be done to preserve this look on the engine....specifically the front of it that is seen and viewed from the front when the hood is up....mine has started to get a chalky white residue that wipes off easily for now. Can I clean it and apply a light coat of clear engine paint?? I've heard of Sharkhyde (sp?) but need to research if it will work on an engine. I've noticed the water pump is a shade darker and possibly painted silver and is not producing the chalky residue. Love the bare aluminum finish and want to preserve that look if possible. Thanks BOSS2664
