I will now have to add this to my list of favorites, they did a great job on this.
I don't want to be the spoiler, but the tire guy saves the day.

The Big Wheel, this has a lot of the Indycar drivers of the time doing cameo. Mauri Rose, Miller, Offenhause, etc.

Gran Prix with James Garner

Winning with Paul Newman

LeMans with Steve McQeen has great in car before they wimped out the Mulsanne Straight

Gran Tourismo

Are all classics

I dunno. Call me a cynic but I'm still waiting for a good movie about racing. I think McQueen Lemans is about the best, but if I recall right they also had a love story in there somewhere didn't they?

Didn't Cruise make a racing movie? A Nascar movie? It was laughable as I recall. The names of the two main characters were right out of a stereotype index of nascar driver names.

Saw the film today and enjoyed it. The special effects were done well. Saw it in IMAX and don’t get too excited about it. Could not help but think about “Rush” as I left the theatre.

Worth the time.

It's not a documentary, so don't go there expecting one. It's an action/drama. Appreciate it for what it is. I thought they did a pretty good job and my son had a good time at the IMAX with me...that's a win.

The one thing Pitt did right was putting in his ear-buds in the Daytona scene. Someone told him how to do it, and he nailed it. Racing hard during the night...only dummies do that.

yep McQueen was checking out the wife of the Ferrari driver that was killed the year before, with regards to Cruise move..Days of Thunder,, it wasnt that great, sort of followed the lead of a guy named Tim Richmond, he was the only guy I knew that could match Earnhardt, he died of AIDS..late 80s I think.

Days of thunder is a damn national treasure.

Still have to go see it. I've been holding off because I know I'll pick it apart, but I usually always end up watching all the car/racing related movies, just because. As long as it's not too cheesy (like "Driven") I'll be entertained. Nice to see some people in here giving it a little praise.

I don't know how they could possibly make a racing movie that isn't cheesy, since they have to attract a bigger audience than just the racing fans. Movie goers crave over the top effects and drama. If it doesn't have all of that, the movie usually flops. One of the reasons I loved LeMans was because of the limited dialogue. That made it more authentic, but that would never fly in today's world of cinema. I can't see how a truly authentic racing movie would attract enough people to make a profit.

Maybe I just need to stick to documentaries (loved the Senna documentary). Still need to finish The Lionheart documentary about Dan Wheldon.

I was afraid it would be Driven 2.0 and it was definitely not that :) Although there was one scene where I distinctly thought about a comparison.

I personally liked it for what it was. During the movie, I was entertained but after sitting on it for a few days after, I was not a huge fan of the story line. I do think there is awareness of both sides that as mentioned, you have to find a balance. The drivers themselves after the premier said that they had to remember it is Hollywood so there had to be some dramatization. I appreciate how involved everyone in F1 was though to at least help capture a little bit in their world despite the exaggeration. I've watched a few interviews with Lewis, Brad Pitt and Damson Idris on the preparation over the last 2-3 years. Huge commitment and kinda cool to see behind the scenes like Pitt driving the McLaren F1 car around COTA. At least they didn't just do it for the cameras.

Again, not a huge fan of the story line but I appreciate the effort that went into it.

by the way this is coming from a millennial, and I know some of you have been watching racing movies before my parents even thought about my existence so there's that lol

Yeah I enjoyed it for what it was but kinda knew what to expect story-line wise; it being a Bruckheimer movie and all.... of course the plot, music, etc felt like it did ("Top Gun in F1"). What I did appreciate is the amount of realism of the actual racing sequences that the big screen did a great job of making you feel like you were there. I read some of the interviews explaining how they did that - using actual F1 races, filming in between sessions with the real spectators there, utilizing real F1 drivers and team owners/managers in the plot, having the actors really driving the cars, etc. I'm not sure how well it will translate to watching on streaming TV but on the big screen it was great summer escapism and entertainment.

And, for a couple of hours, I finally got to watch some F1 action where the winner wasn't always named either Max or Lewis.

Along the lines of " picking it apart", at the end, where the tire guy saves the day by holding back a set of qualifiers and adding 3 psi to them, a lot of people griped that in F1 they use Bar, not that true, using PSI actually gives you more resolution (.1psi as an example) than you can get by using Bar. So that was actually pretty legit, a lot of WEC and whatever teams still use psi.

The key is not to take it too seriously. Racers, racing fans and enthusiasts will never be completely satisfied with any big budget car film. Nothing wrong with making something more accessible to a wider audience. Plus you get so many quotable lines.

I would submit that most of life’s lessons can be extracted from lines from Talledega nights and Days of Thunder.

“If you ain’t first you are last”
“Rubbin is racing”
“Loose is fast”

Like I said, just don’t take it too seriously. 🙃

Agree to disagree.
