Don't count on Ford bringing over any diesels. They would need to re-engineer them to meet US emissions.

Diesels are more popular in Europe for a lot of reasons. Diesel is less expensive than gasoline there, and it is available at every station. Fuel in general is way more expensive in Europe, so a 25% increase in mileage saves you a lot more money there than here. Run the numbers for 50 MPG diesel vs. 40 MPG gasoline, using European prices. Euro drivers save a ton of money with diesels, where in the US, your fuels costs would be about equal, or with prices where they are right now, diesel costs are even MORE expensive than gasoline.

A diesel Beetle costs $4000 more than a gasoline model, and it gets 41 MPG. The gasoline model gets 31 MPG. I filled up yesterday for $1.70 for regular gasoline. Diesel around here is still running $2.70, a dollar per gallon higher! Fuel costs on diesel are way higher at this point. Also, winter temperatures in Western Europe where diesels are popular are generally warmer than the US, especially the central US. I know a lot of people who leave their diesels at home when it is below zero.

Now, let's start discussing another fuel anomaly. The US has a mandate that 15 Billion gallons of ethanol be added to the fuel supply every year. Ethanol is now MORE EXPENSIVE than gasoline. Looked at the price of E85 lately? You would be a fool to put E85 in your vehicle when the price per gallon is anywhere near the price of regular. Of course, if you have a car tuned for E85, you have no choice, but if you are Flex Fuel, you definitely need to flex toward gasoline!
