Ford offers back seats for stripped-down GT350R Mustang

Ford has introduced optional back seats for the stripped-down Shelby GT350R Mustang.

Billed as the most track-capable Mustang ever built in Ford's factories, the GT350R omits a long list of creature comforts including the air conditioning system, stereo, trunk floorboard, exhaust resonators, rear-view camera, tire-repair kit and rear bench seat.
The deleted components and carbon-fiber wheels equate to a weight savings of approximately 130 pounds compared to the standard GT350 outfitted with the optional Track Pack.

The company already offered an Electronics Package that returns the A/C, an eight-inch navigation system and a seven-speaker stereo system. Some buyers appear to have been more concerned about the missing rear seats, limiting the coupe to just driver and a single passenger.

"We always listen to customer feedback," said Ford Performance director Dave Pericak. "So when many requested a back seat for their GT350R, we acted quickly to make it available."

The bench features the same Alcantara cloth as the front racing seats, with red accent stitching and occupant restraint systems. The company recommends installation by an authorized service center, ensuring proper installation of the seat belts. It is unclear if the seats can be quickly removed at the track.

Both the GT350 and GT350R share the same 5.2-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine, delivering 526 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque and a screaming 8,250-rpm redline. Ford claims the GT350R beat the rival Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 and matched the Porsche 911 GT3 benchmark lap times measured at Grattan Raceway outside Grand Rapids.

The GT350 starts at $49,995 (including freight, guzzler tax), complete with a rear seat, while the GT350R commands $63,495. The R's optional back seat is available for $999.
