Am helping out a friend who is swapping out his dead Gen1 for a Gen 2. I assume that you need to use a gen2 pcm and harness etc?? Or can you get by with the gen1 pcm?
The engine is coming out of a crashed S550 and buying the cars gen 2 pcm is a option.

Looks like its easier to just add a Boss manifold that needs a home and keep the gen1 pcm etc. No blockoff needed. Looks like the harness is ok as well... fingers crossed.

The timing drive is a concern:

the Gen2 mid-lock intake phasers cannot be reliably controlled via a gen1 pcm - I know there's some tuning hacks people have tried, but nothing seems easy. I would think to get the gen2 PCM working you'd need a number of the gen2 harnesses to enable its use (along with the instrument cluster) and a lot of custom work.

Easiest bet is to open the engine up, replace the intake cams with gen1 units ($250), and install a gen1 timing system (FRPP sells a kit <$500). The exhaust cams can be reused (they're a variant of the boss 302 exhaust cam and gen1 phasers will fit them). Then all the gen1 controls and wiring can be reused.

Thanks!! Very much appreciated!
