So I melted a hole and my number eight cylinder of my GEN1 engine. So I am now building a new engine using an illuminator GEN3 block and my GEN1 top end. This is not a money is no object build. I’m just trying to build a solid reliable engine for autocross use. My Gen1 heads have been sent out to be cleaned up and have boss 302 Valve Springs installed.

This thread is a place to make comments if you see me doing something incredibly wrong. also hopefully it helps somebody down the road trying to do this themselves.

My first question or maybe comment involves an extra hole in the front of the GEN3 engine block. It looks to me like its purpose might be to allow some extra oil to splash in on the timing chains. Does anybody know for sure? Attached our pictures on the front of the GEN1 block and my old GEN1 block. Note the extra 33mm hole about 1 o’clock position from the crank.

Things I learned as I button up the engine:
1. Don’t forget to change out the VCT filter in the end of the camshafts.
2. 11-15 crank sensor will not fit in the Gen3 rear crank cover. You either need to swap to a Gen1 rear cover, or an adaptor made by Make It Modular. I am using the adaptor. Also the Gen3 Crank sensor is 3 wire, the Gen 1 is 2 wire.
3. The gen 3 block has 4 knock sensors, not 2 like the Gen1. There are two knock sensor pads machined into the Gen3 block that match the Gen1 block. I will be using those and not the 4 used by a Gen3 wire harness.
4. Getting the timing chains set up looks hard, it not. Just line up the colored timing chain links with the crank in the correct position. UTube is your friend.

My upgrades:
1. Comp cams timing chains. 15% thicker plates
2. mMR oil pump and timing gear
3. Boss timing chain tensioners
4. 5.2 water pump. 30% more flow
5. bigger 52 lb injectors for E85
6. Morosso RR oil pan
Car also has Headers, Gen3 intake. I’m staying with the stock cams since I spend most of my time in the mid range.

Did the short block come with new head bolts? I think the Gen 3 uses longer bolts

No it did not come with new head bolts. I checked the hole depth in both blocks and they were the same. If the Gen3 bolts are longer, it might be a head thickness thing or just an upgrade. I did replace the head bolts with the Ford Performance head kit. They were the same length as my old ones.

Yea ford went to different bolts for Gen 2. Didn’t know about the FP bolts. Will go with those.
