you know what's cool, at least for me? I built an engine for a Gt500 just like the one in the middle. 2 -4bbls. I forget the engine configuration, it was either a 427 with police interceptor heads, or a 428. they all kind of run together. Did a 67 and a 68 Shelby. One was a KR and had air conditioning, that was a rare bear.

Reminded me of my (much younger) days working a summer at Holman Ford in Pennsauken, NJ. I was a teenage gearhead.

As I recall, The 427 was Fords go to race spec engine with a shorter stroke (higher revs) and it had solid lifters up to its last year in production, then converted for hyd. lifters. It was also available in Side Oiler & Top Oiler renditions. Race applications preferred the Side Oiler version as it lubricated the crank/main brgs. first.

The 428’s had a longer stroke, more lbs.ft. torque & all 428’s were hyd. lifter motors. Both were FE design engines based off the older Y block design. This means it’s cylinder block casting extends below the crankshaft centerline. Excellent for main bearing stability, but heavy.

If I were looking to build a high compression performance Ford BB, I would look for the ‘Non-Boss’ 429 ‘385’ series motor (mid 1970 or 1971 date code). Big improvements everywhere and it’s a bit lighter as the block casting terminated at the Crankshaft centerline. 429 SCJ motors are awesome.

Fond memories.
