I had not seen these before:

While not ideal, if it could capture valve-spring bits (the end of the flat ground wire breaking off) prior to the oil pump ingesting them, perhaps some havoc could be prevented. This oil pump design with its aluminum housing and powdered metal gears just seems more susceptible to foreign object damage. You see people showing pictures of scored oil pump gears and housings and there not many suspects for the cause beyond broken valve-spring ends.

Once my 5.2 is out of warranty, I think some epoxied magnets in the head near the drain holes, a valve-spring upgrade, and oil pump gears might prolong engine life.

I think I'll have to order one of these drain plugs for now.
 
Nice find. The OPG in my 350 was destroyed and it's hard to imagine it doing that without a bit of help.
