just huntin' around for tires and this caught my eye. $219/tire seems pretty nice.

When I was at SEMA the Hankook rep told me the RS3 replacement would be out this spring so it must be ready. He wasn't sure if it would be called the RS4 but I bet it will be.

Yea, if you look they have the closeout, then they have a version 2 in the same size, which must be the new compound. Are they typically 300? If so, then I won't even bother comparing them to anything else and just buy some. Storing them indoors and out of the sun for a year won't hurt, right?

Crazy. They still have the old stock 140 marked treadwear for sale (220 200 rated are newer, but the same 'old' compound). Would be nice if they listed the rating of the Version 2 tires.

I have been unable to find anything talking about the new compounds coming out. If someone has a link please post it. Regardless these tires work well for a street tire on the track so take advantage of the closeout prices. ;D

Regarding the tire rating and from TireRack's website:

"NOTE:

During 2012, Hankook Tire changed the Uniform Tire Quality Grade (UTQG) Treadwear rating of their Ventus R-S3 Z222 Extreme Performance Summer tire.

UTQG ratings for Treadwear, Traction and Temperature are based on tests conducted by tire manufacturers and reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). These regulations allow tire manufacturers to under-rate their tires’ capabilities, but prohibit over-rating them. UTQG ratings are required to be branded on tire sidewalls and printed on their labels.

When the Ventus R-S3 Z222 was introduced in spring of 2009, Hankook assigned the 140 Treadwear rating to match the UTQG Treadwear rating required by existing competition rules. However subsequent Hankook wear data revealed the tire line provided equivalent wear to its predecessor (Ventus R-S2) and earned the same 200 Treadwear rating. This has also been supported by our survey results and customer feedback that indicate Ventus R-S3 Z222 tires provide equivalent wear to other tires already featuring similar UTQG Treadwear ratings.

With some competition rules now requiring higher UTQG Treadwear ratings, Hankook decided it was time to officially change the Ventus R-S3 Z222 line’s rating to accurately reflect its capabilities.

Since 140- and 200-Treadwear rated tires are available*, both currently appear on NHTSA’s safercar.gov website for the Ventus R-S3 Z222 line.

No changes were made to tire compound or construction, so all Ventus R-S3 Z222 tire sizes continue to use the same by-size Hankook S-Code (part number). Both 140- and 200-Treadwear-rated tires are compatible with each other when put into service as singles, pairs or in combination."

The old tires are now more expensive than the new ones lol.

I didn't understand that either. All the really old 140 marked tires are crazy expensive.

Should've gotten a spare set before they ran out :-\

I would have, but I still have another set to burn through. :-\ And I want to move up to slicks.

Looks like they've went up to the retail price, which vendors usually do when items are out of stock... or close to being out of stock in this case.

I guess my next set will be Rivals or Dunlop ZII's, which are on closeout already?!

I'm trying to hold off slicks until I have a roll-bar, harness, and brake cooling ducts, which won't be for another few years lol
Although, some of these slicks are priced very competitively nowadays ::)

This is very tempting... If I wasn't tight on space, I would've jumped on this already... But the tires might be pretty close to expiring, so may need to use them up, fast.

Very true and that was confirmed by the tirerack rep, he said they are less pliable so use them soon, no wonder they are cheaper

Can tell the difference between this:

and this:

Anyone?

The cheaper ones are 2009 production. The other ones are probably 2011, maybe 2010. Both of those are 140 TW. The same tire was changed to a 200 tread wear after that.

And these fit on the stock wagon wheels?
These will.

Well if I had taken the extra second to read the link, I'd have known that ;). Kids are fun (I was watching mine while scanning). $750 (less $200 for a Christmas present :)) isn't bad at all for a new set of tires that are superior to the stockers. Ironically, these are the same tires, albeit much larger, that I just put on my MINI JCW before I sold it. I only ran it for ~ 1500 miles but they seemed solid to me.
