Interesting New Boss 302...

So I picked up a Certified Pre-owned Boss 302 a little over a month ago, and the previous owner had some interesting tastes:

http://tinypic.com/r/1429eua/8
http://tinypic.com/r/14ncqdz/8
http://tinypic.com/r/e6x4kz/8

VIN checks out as a Boss, placard on the intake manifold matches the VIN on the windshield and the door jam sticker, CarFax is clean, and it's a CPO from a Ford dealership.

So I guess my question is, why remove the hood decal, and repaint the roof & spoiler competition orange?

Looks like the roof was painted as well. I'd say that was just their personal taste. I prefer the black accents myself but some others may not. Enjoy your Boss regardless.

As far as Boss 302 verification, the 8th digit of your VIN must be a "U", as this is Ford's Boss 302 engine designation. So that is an easy check. The hood does have the black decal removed as all Boss 302's received the stripe kits at the Mod Shop next to the assembly line. There was no Boss 302 decal delete option.

The spoiler is the short version, standard Boss 302 equipment for non LS Boss Models, (M/C 500A). It was repainted, and one thing you did not mention is your roof. This was changed some where along the line, as originally the Boss 302 roof was the same color as the body side C stripe.

As for your Boss ID number matching your VIN number, it does not. Only the very early production LS VIN's may have matched the Boss ID number. But remember the LS has a different number sequence. It's only 3 digits, like: LS001 or, LS431, etc. Originally only 750 LS M/C 501A unit were to be built. But they did make a few more. Other BMO Members can tell you exact production numbers.

Your Boss 302, 500A was to have a total of 3,250 units built. But again Ford built a few more or a few less. Again others can tell you exact 500A production numbers.

Then your Boss 302 has a 4 digit Boss ID number like 0001, or 2,800, up to (or about), 3,250. Your Boss ID number will not match your VIN number unless it was a one out of a million chance event. You get what I mean, e.g. "Anything is Possible".

As far as why the changes? The original, or subsequent owners just had different taste and liked it better this way. I've seen some Boss owners remove all stripes and make their cars look like V6 models, abet with fat tires! Sleepers.

Hope this helps and you will find this is a great forum with great members that are more than happy to help you.

Good luck with your new to you Boss 302, she looks well taken care of and you can't go wrong with a Ford CPO unit.

Have fun and enjoy it!
Dave
302 Hi Pro

The Mustang is one of the most modified cars on the planet so no surprise here. I'm not a big fan of the hood wart as well. ;)

I don't think he was talking about the build number. My intake tag has the VIN printed on it along with the Boss build number. Sounds to me like that is what he was referring to. They should match as OP stated.

it's very differant in a very nice way. I say no harm no foul! Enjoy that pony!
Dont be surprized if people say look at that clone...Lol
You can tell them>>>Clone This ;)

I am sure that would detract from the cars value someday, for concours minded people like me, but visually I think painting the roof the body color is a huge improvement. I never liked that about the 12's but I do like the stripe on the hood.

Lol that's one of the things I'm afraid of is being labeled a clone, but I can for sure backup it's legitimacy! ;)

It's odd to see a Comp Orange car with all that Comp Orange. I like it!

Thanks! I really like it too. I have an '04 Comp Orange Mach 1 and said the only way I would ever get rid of it was if I came across a Comp Orange Boss at a reasonable price...and look what happened! ;)

That's the other thing I was afraid of was detracting from its value...but honestly I don't ever plan to get rid of it, so who do I really need to add value for besides myself right? ;D
