It's better (generally) for Florida if the hurricane heads up the east coast. The reason is the continent drops off precipitously in the Atlantic side. If the hurricane comes up the west side, the Gulf of Mexico is fairly shallow, so it's like pushing water across a table, rather than up a wall as the west coast is just above sea level. You could probably expect storm surge 20 miles inland, on top of the rain already there.

I lived in St. Thomas in 2009-2010. The amount of destruction there is incredible and heartbreaking. The place will take years to rebuild. Everyone in FL stay safe - get out if you can.
