In its quest to return to relevance, Lincoln won't stop at redesigning its core models. Instead, the brand is planning to build towards being a full-line luxury automaker, and it's weighing the use of all of parent company Ford's platforms - even the Mustang's rear-wheel-drive architecture - to get the job done.

Speaking with Edmunds, Matt VanDyke, Lincoln's global head of marketing, sales and service, acknowledged that the brand's revival will require an infusion of new product.

"We know we need added nameplates," VanDyke said. "We know that we need to get into other segments with other vehicles."

VanDyke acknowledged the possibility of a driver-focused model based on the 2015 Ford Mustang's rear-wheel-drive underpinnings, stating that Lincoln "won't rule out anything."

Lincoln is currently in the process of revamping its four key offerings. The redesigned 2014 MKZ sedan was the first to arrive, launching last year, while the second, the 2015 MKC compact crossover, went on sale in May. The new-generation MKX midsize crossover will arrive next year as a 2016 model, followed by a replacement for the MKS full-size sedan in 2016.

"We don't think that four new products in four years means that we can sit back, take a break and rest," VanDyke said. "It is absolutely the beginning, it is the foundation."

Just what will follow those models is currently unknown, but VanDyke did state that subsequent Lincolns will continue to utilize Ford platforms and powertrains while boasting unique styling, upgraded engineering and brand-specific sizing.

Personally, I think Ford needs to bring their global vehicles that aren't sold in the U.S. into the states as Lincolns. It doesn't have to be a straight rebadge job but a Falcon based Lincoln sedan to seriously compete with the CTS, 5 series, and E class would put Lincoln back on the map. This would be very similar to how Cadillac did it with the CTS. Ironically, it's Lincoln's fault Cadillac has had their resurgence because the Escalade never happens without the Navigator.
