Loudest and Best Axle Back to buy?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

I know quite a few of you have either changed the entire exhaust system or at least changed your axle backs, so what did you go with?

I am not looking to modify the headers or main exhaust, I am only interested in the Axle Back Mufflers/Exhaust.

Everyone I have talked to in the local area says the Loudest Axle Backs you can buy are the Borla ATAK Axle Backs.
For a good all around sound that is not to loud to or quite, the Ford Racing GT500 Axel Backs are what you want.
I have also heard good things about FlowMasters Outlaws (though most say it has a "Drone" at Highway speeds).

What I am looking for is a Deeper Louder sound that will scare little kids and blow off women's clothes... LOL

Seriously though, I just want a deeper and louder sound note, the Stock BOSS Exhaust sounds great, no doubt, but I think there is room for improvement with the Axle Back Mufflers.

Comments, Suggestions, Gripes?

I have had the GT500 and its only a little louder and deeper than stock. I now have the magnflow comp cat back. It is much louder and deeper than stock but not wake the dead loud. If you want really loud you can just go with a muffler delete like pypes bomb axle back.

the corsa axle back is what some may suggest as its loud and has no drone.
this is the kit I have

Now I will say asking what is the best muffler system is much like asking what is the best color boss....personal pref by far. Best thing is to dig through youtube and listen to the various sound clips and pick one.

here is a video of my boss on the dyno with the magnaflow comp cat back on it

I have the Kooks long tubes, Kooks off road x-pipe and Corsa Extreme axle back. It is fairly quite at idle and has no drone on the highway but is crazy (blow off women's clothes) loud when accelerating.

I agree with listening to as many as you can online. You can get the tone and general sound but it's difficult to tell just how loud it is since the volume can be adjusted.

I had magnaflow magnapacks on my '01 Bullitt. It was pretty loud but had lots of drone on the highway and in town.

I really like the Corsa Extremes. You also save about 30lbs total. Here are a few clips. They always sound higher pitched in the recordings:

This one you can hear a Porsche GT3, then the much deeper Boss coming behind it:

Mixed sounds:

Couple GT3s and then the Boss:

Just the Boss:

I have a complete Magnaflow on my GT500, while it is much better sounding than stock, I am not as pleased with it as I am the Borla ATAK I put on my Boss. However, as most have mentioned, this is very personal and subjective. All I can say is that I am NOT at all dissappointed in the Borla and would do them again. You might also look at MRTs.

how an exhaust system will sound on one car wont sound the same on another....ie gt500 brand x will sound diff from boss with same brand exhaust.

I really miss the sound of the 4.6 mod motor it sounded so much better IMO my 96 cobra sounded awesome. my cousin tried to replicate that sound on his 2011 Mustang GT used the same brand headers same mufflers same brand x pipe....sounded like SH#$.

So exhaust goes down as one of those things that others cant really recommend or not recommend as it comes down to personal taste. I doubt your favorite song will match up with mine lol.

What I can say is the facts.

The magnaflow cat back I have fits great and was made with great construction. Other brands that have great quality I have used in the past.
SLP
Pypes
Ford racing

Brands that I thought sucked and made "chinsy" parts
BBK x-pipe for the 96 cobra....rattled like a tin can full of BB's
MAC cat back on the cobra.....rusted out in two years
Flow master Cat back on the cobra.....rusted out and continually had axle tubes pop out

Now BBK has really steeped up there game since....2003 with the newer mustangs. there headers are really nice now in stainless form.

Until flowmaster goes to stainless steel construstion through out I wont buy from them again.

I have the Stainless Works retro chambered catback and do not like it but got a good deal on it used. It is a big weight savings as there is no resonators or mufflers. I was looking for the biggest weight savings and extremely loud but the drone at highway speeds is pretty bad and it didnt fit properly either. I am also not happy with the decreased sound from the side pipes. I should of just went with an axle back. I do not recommend this exhaust at all.

Do the tips of the Cross Xtremes go over another smaller pipe? The stock exhaust has this pipe inside a pipe look and I strongly dislike it.

I dont think so its a double walled tip from what I can tell but maybe someone that owns them will chime in

Here's a good look at the tips:

Before you spend a lot of cash on modifying your exhaust. Take the restrictor plates out of your side exhaust and see how that sounds. Takes 10 mins and it's a cheap way to change the sound of your car. It is loud. I have heard rumours it's good for 11 horse but have seen no hard data to back that claim up.

It does definitely improve the sound. I found that due to the extremely restrictive factory mufflers, removing the restrictor plates drove ALL the sound out the side exhaust. Once I installed the Corsa Extremes, it balanced it out nicely between the side and rear exhaust.
