Definitely one of the greatest in my mind because he could and did win in just about every form of racing there is from dirt ovals to F1. Not too many people are that versatile. It also doesn't hurt that he comes across as relatively humble and not an arrogant snot like some other F1 pilots.

Watched the new F1 series on amazon... loved it... but could not like the pilots much..... Walking ego machines still in diapers.... (yes...they can drive fast). Prefer the drivers from before.... Lauda, Andretti, Mansel etc

When you take the versatility of Mario to drive virtually anything with four wheels, it is quite difficult to name another individual with a similar skill level? Most are from generations back, and some like Dan Gurney may make a similar impact ,but the stats don't add up greater than Mario. Once you list his wins in IndyCar , F1, Nascar and more , it becomes difficult to drop other names in the mix. Sure there are some drivers that one might be able to show some broad skill sets ( good example would be Tony Stewart with Indy, Nascar, Midget and other National Championships ) , but considering Mario's high level of competition in each venue, it is hard to argue his Driver of the Century award?

There are many great drivers out there , yet it is amazing to me how few have conquered the racing pinnacles in the manner Mario has?

Tony Steward and AJ Foyt likely come close on track. Off track both were just a bit less humble. AJ is a legend. Tony has done more for the sport after he stopped driving than Mario and AJ. Tony will likely be a first ballot hall of fame member.

I agree with MH. With kids now getting behind the wheel at the age of 5. Few are humble or even developed/matured when they start driving in the major series. They miss out on “Character Building” along the way.

Mario was/is the whole package.

Amen, Tracy. Nothing against youth but go out and earn respect before you start running your mouth and proclaiming greatness. That's how AJ, Mario and Tony did it.
