To be fair to McLaren, their cars are quite fast ([brag warning] here's a 1:29 lap on OEM street tires from last weekend) but as you observe the driver also needs to be on their game.

I’ve found at COTA that those who show up in exotics or race cars are either blindingly fast and don’t have to worry about their rear views much or their like the McLaren driver Ben had the displeasure of waiting behind—several seconds off the cars pace and completely ego driven.

It sure is fun to pass the big boys in a lowly mustang
