I used the rivet doing the mock-up:
As you can see the lid lays over the edge of the boot and the bracket is already slightly to the right in this picture. Real estate wise there no movement of the can to the right but if I could slide the battery over another inch or so the the left, my worries would be over. It has been like this for years but only recently have I noticed the scuffing on the positive terminal boot.
Looks like your bracket might be on backwards? Mine are going toward the back and the vertical part is just in front of the insulation on the firewall. I think you should be able to flip the bracket and the breather can will go about 1"+ backward.
Unless the top tab was bent the wrong way?
The bracket is the only thing between the can and the firewall but you know, I did fab the bracket myself and certainly could have done something wrong. I'm up in Washington state all week but I'll have to take a closer look when I get back.
I have drawings for a bracket that will tuck your can against the firewall if needed.
