This is relatively "common", although I have not seen this happen with any rears personally. It may be a sign that the axle was not properly vented during past use (although typically this just blows out the axle end tube seals).

This could be a very good opportunity to have the axle tubes welded at the pumpkin, which will deliver more reliability in the long run anyways.

Other opinions?

This is what the road race guys at Ford Performance recommend (welding the tubes to center section) to keep this from occurring.
