The Boss 302 supplement manual says to remove the rear brake dust shields before tracking the car, could this impact any of this discussion? Do people actually do that?
Yes, I took mine off a few years ago when I pulled the axles to install bigger rotors. Brake temps are better and have not had any issues without the dust shields.

Like many others have mentioned, this is very common on the S197’s, but haven’t heard any feedback from S550 guys. @PaddyPrix and I were discussing this during a recent wheel bearing replacement on the Stripper.

When changing pads I thought the rear rotors looked a little unusual, could it be from overheating? Curious on your thoughts and remedies... thanks

I had a Ford tech tell me the spotty patterns on the rears is an indicator that ABS and AdvanceTrac are stepping in. Makes sense, as that correction is usually pulsating pressures.

I'm not sure if the Boss is the same as the S550, but the stock S550 rear rotors draw air in from the outside. I ran without them for a while and didn't notice that the rotor looked different after a track do or any difference in feel, but I never checked temps with an infrared thermometer to be sure.

So I not sure removing the shields does much, at least in my case.
