These crappy lug nuts have been around a long time
Truth. I had the same issues on my '89 Escort GT. Solved that by cutting the covers off the lug nuts - I think they were originally metric and after pulling off the shells and cleaning the crud off the nuts underneath I could use an inch socket on them.
