Alright guys, here goes...

Starting to consider replacement tires for the street. I am not going to track this car (just yet) so I don't need tires with a W or Y speed rating and having a treadwear that is better than butter is preferred. Also, I am particular about parts made in North America when and where possible.

As I see it, the options are:

BFG Sport Comp-2
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric
Continental Extreme Contact DW
Michelin Pilot Super Sport
Any of the above in all-season

I am worried about anything with a treadwear over 400 as these might not be sticky enough for normal driving with the torque of the Boss even on the street so I am guessing that any all season tire is out since these have high (500) treadwear ratings. That leaves me with the four above.

In tabular form for the rears:

BrandModelUTQG Treadwear, Traction, TempWeightSize
BFGSport Comp-2340 AA A29.8285/35ZR19
Good YearEagle F1 Asymetric 2300 AA A29285/35R19
ContinentalExtreme Contact DW340 AA A27285/35ZR19
MichelinPilot Super Sport300 AA A28285/35ZR19
Mickey ThompsonStreet Comp300 AA A30285/35r/19

Anyone update their tires to any of these yet? Looking for feedback. I have a ways to go but the rears are starting to get down to about 1/4 tread left after 15,000 miles and I want to be ready.

Thanks!!!

John

I picked up the Eagle Asymetric All Seasons and put them on a set of Boss 302S wheels. I can't say I have run them super hard, but I can't complain about their performance. Especially in the wet and I don't have to worry about chunks coming off my original Pirellis in the winter when it is below 40 degrees. Wear rating is stated kinda high, but I read a number of good reviews and it is a newer tire (especially in our sizes) using newer compounds. So I figured what the hell. I already had my new set of wheels just waiting for tires.

I have Continental ExtremeContact DW and track them. They stock Pirelli's have slightly better grip when hot but the Conti's are better in the wet and wear much better. The Conti's also have better grip than the stock Pirelli's when it's cold out but they still lose a lot compared to warm weather. I heard great things about the Michelin PSS though so I will be trying them next.

One tire that I never see mentioned are the Kumho LE Sport.
I bought a set and love them.
They are very inexpensive and perform fine on the street.
I use Toyo 888 for the track.
I used the Kumho's in a 118 mile open road race called the Big Bend, in Fort Stockton Tx.
Average speed for the 118 miles was 120 mph, with a high speed of 140.
The tires worked prefectly.
The nice thing about these tires are that they come in our stock size and load rating.
They won't perform like the Michelin PSS, but they are plenty good for the street.

Save the dawn for your dishes!!!
ive been looking over the same thing cause mine are nearly bald out back now. and the pirellis have never impressed me. I am moving to indy next month and want something all season but at the same time like you i dont want to give up dry traction on the street either.

I have been really looking at the above mentioned eagle F1's all seasons my 06 gt had an older version on it when I bought it and they were great ran 12.79 with them at the strip and still managed a 1.9 60ft with them. granted it didnt have the power the boss does but compared to the pirelli's i put on it later the all season pirelli's felt like driving on ice.

really my goal is to have a set of UHP tires mounted on a nice set of wheels and another set of winter tires mounted on a cheap American muscle wheel but i cant make up my mind.

I really like the new mickey thompson if I was going for a straight UHP for the street thats the one I am going to get.

im in to see what others recommend and what you go with and your impressions....cords arent showing on mine yet....lol. i have the warranty on the wheels and tires so i might "accidently" back over a board of nails with them and get a new set.

I run Bridgestone Pole Position SO-4s. A recent sale at Tirerack put them at $1k/set. LS stock size.

I like them enough to have purchased a second set; I have not yet hit a road course though. Folks here have commented that the tires are really heavy.

+1 on the Mickey Thompson SC Radials. I'm cutting 1.8 60' with mine and love their overall wet and dry perf. They're also the cheapest out there I believe.

Well, I hate revealing all my secrets, but here's an A/S to keep an eye on:

ok added the MT tires but will also add those michelins later (ipad it takes too long).

Also, sorry that I didn't add Kumho or Bridgestone or Sumitomo as these are definitely foreign brands and I'm just not interested. As I said earlier, looking for something made in north american if possible. Now I also realize that some on the list are not made in NA but I will be looking into that as a next step. For instance, Goodyear imports too so there isn't any guarantee.

Thanks again for the info!!!

John

Just because it is made in NA doesn't mean it is a good quality. Just because it is made outside of NA doesn't mean it is poor quality. The manufacturing facilities and capabilities in NA could never supply the demand. Some Name Brands use factories in dozens of Country's to fill demand. The MT Street Comps are made in China but still an American Brand sold by North American's to North Americans. I have seen in some cases where the same Brand and model of tire can be made in different Country's depending on which tire size it is.

Just to be clear. I am not saying do or don't support domestic products. Deciding to only buy domestic should be commended and I do it as much as I can when it makes sense. Sometimes and American, or in my case Canadian businesses may not be my best value all things being equal.

I run the Continental DW on my Boss. I like them a lot. As others have said, the wet grip is way better than the Pirellis. Dry grip is good, and track use I think they could be better at ultimate grip, however they do provide great feedback on track. Breakaway is gradual and they communicate very well both audibly and tactile.

I also looked at the Michelins, but the cost made me go with the Contis. I did however score some used Michelin rears in a 295 size from a buddy who ran them in the One Lap of America, and won on them. He loved them and had great things to say about them. They must use the same set of tires for the whole event and they had enough life left at the end for me to try them out. I didn't get the fronts due to a large chunk out of one tire, but tread wise they looked like they would have been fine for a while longer.

I also am one of the few who did not complain about the Pirelli tires that came on our car. I got over 20k out of them, including track time, and thought they were a pretty good tire all around. I mainly went with the Conti due to price and to support the the main sponsor of my favorite race series.

Agreed. Not willing to buy crap just because it is made here. Just being mindful of purchasing local first and that is exactly why I started this thread.

Glad to see so many options. Then, like I said in my second post, it will be time to figure out where they are actually fabricated. I have some Goodyears that were fabricated in South America on my GT. Who woulda thought?! Would love to find tires from an American company that were made in America. We can't outsource all of our jobs and then complain because so many people are out of work.

I just put a set of BFG's comp 2 on and I can't complain so far. I like the ride, no noise that I can hear over the engine, I havn't had them get loose on me yet. I had over 25k on the stock tires and couldn't push them at all any more. The main reason I chose these was the price. Only problem was I could not find the stock size for the fronts. Ended up going up to a 275/40/19.

Just so you know Michelin owns BFG. The BFG comp 2 is the same carcass as the Michelin PS2 they just have different tread and wear rating. I am running them and I cant complain they are grippy and I like the feedback they give me.

I always read that BFG was owned by Michellin, but I wasn't aware that they used the same carcas!
Just curious - where did you find this data? I really wish they still have the 255 size for the fronts :(

Edit - 255 is still listed on bfg's site. I wonder if Tirerack is simply out of stock?

I went through America's tire in Cali and they called me back and said they couldn't get the fronts. When I did the search on tire rack it does not show the 255 any more? I was looking at the Michellins but they are a lot more $. I paid about $1,200 for all four with installation, TPMS rebuild and road hazard warranty. I wonder if the Tire rack site is filtered depending on where you live and the availibility of stock.

I use these guys in my local area. Service Specialist they are in Irvine & Carlsbad. So far they have been the best pricing I could find. www.servicespecialistinc.com

Maybe they can help you out

Haven't seen anyone mention the Cooper Zeon RS-3 S. I have about 2K miles on mine and have been very happy with them. They were around $1100 mounted. I replaced the stock Pirellis with them and have not noticed any loss in performance. It was the tire developed for the Roush cars and I believe is the same tire as the Mickey T (from the looks of it).
