Tpms required?

I'm buying some track wheel/tires and was just curious if the tpms sensors are required? I think the only issue would be the low pressure light will stay on, but not sure that's worth the $195 for the sensors!

Not required but you will get a TPMS warning in the Message Center that you can clear by pushing reset and you will get tge little yellow low tire lamp next to your traction control off lamp.....and your airbag lamp if you're running a race seat.....and your CEL when you get your random misfires.......nothing a little black electrical tape on your gauge won't solve ;)

If it looks like this you're doing it right :-\

Definitely not required, but when the light comes on it flashes. I don't like flashing yellow lights at the track.

I have TPMS on all 3 sets. Also prefer the metal stems...for a bit more piece of mind.

These are worth looking into, comes with a display you mount in the car. Gives you real time readout of each tire's pressure and temps. No more getting readings on pressure after a cool down lap and having to jump out of the car as soon as you reach the paddock.

do those keep the light from coming on?

i believe the lights will stay on with this kit, you'll just have a real time display of pressure, and temp?

That is correct you will still have the factory idiot light. Posted this in another thread.

The stock system is nothing more then an idiot light telling you one of the four tires is low. These give you real time pressure and temp (inside the rim) and comes with it's own display. When I use my track wheels the stock TPMS light is on but hey, it looks good lit up with the CEL, seatbelt, airbag and other dash lights.

I plan on tricking the car with a 3" or 4" schedule 40 PVC pipe capsule. You can drill and tap one of the caps and insert a shrader to pressurize it, then mount it somewhere like you would a fire extinguisher. Installing a pressure relief valve would be smart. I wouldn't make a tube out of metal pipe, that might end badly in several ways...

Here is my parts list. I will be building one this summer.

Wouldn't it be easier and better to buy a set of sensors for $45 and install them???

I've also read somewhere that the TPMS are powered by the kinetic energy, movement and rotation of the wheels. I never really looked into it, but if that is true, you may have to shake your pipe bomb couple of times a day, or week lol.

...Or strap them to a wheel. ;)

I would get them just to make it easier if I didn't want to use the better pressure/temp monitoring ones. I have to either trick the car or live with the car beeping at me every time I start up. I would rather not be annoyed by the idiot light AND have to switch back and forth to the stock wheels just for inspection stickers every year. If someone makes a set that can work with the cars computer AND give me temp/pressure readings that would be the best option.

Has anyone ever tried taking apart the stock sensors and combining them with the Orange Electronic ones? I am an EE, so that might be an interesting project to grab the raw sensor/transmitter and hack it to run off the Orange Electronic sensors battery. The electronics inside are probably very small compared to the packaging. Hmmm..
