Track Day at Pocono - June 24th - Anyone Interested

Is anyone going to the Hooked On Driving event at Pocono on 6/24? It's on the Long Course (Front Straight, Turn 1, back straight, turn 2, then through the infield and back out on the front straight - should be a very fast setup). I spoke with the owner a week or two ago and they don't expect many people. It's a little on the expensive side ($325) but should be a good chance to get a lot or open track time. Not to mention, there doesn't seem to be many events held at Pocono, especially on this track configuration. Also, it's sponsored by Rousch. Let me know if anyone plans on going - I'm looking for some other BOSS owners to run with.

Hey Sean,
Thanks for the heads-up on this! This is great!
I'd be a first timer and in the Beginner group, but I am going to see if I can pull it together and go. If not this one, then maybe the next one at Motorsports Park.

Thanks,
Steve

Here is the sponsoring link and organization I looked up:

That Long Course looks like it's going to be a blast. I have been to many NASCAR races there and I would love the chance to drive it. However if I was still up that way I think I would have to hit the Glen first ;D

I'm kinda feel the same way, Scott. There's a PCA 2/3 day event at the Glen that weekend too. I'm leaning towards Pocono though (gotta decide soon). There seems to be limited opportunities at Pocono while there are lots of upcoming events at the Glen.

You have to take the opportunities when they come around, so I would say head out to the Pocono event. Sounds like running at HMS down hear on the Grand-Am course. The banking is open very rarely.

I take it you have run the Glen? Is it as scary as it looks from the vids, seems there is little room for error there?

I am now signed up to go! See you there.

Watkins Glen definitly has some challenging points if you're pushing it. In the rain it gets even more interesting. The uphill esses can be run WOT or close to it which gives you 145+ on the back straight, but if you screw it up you're staring at a wall ;-) The "Bus Stop" is also very interesting, there is a turtle that you need to hit very high in order to straighten out the track at that section. In my TTS I had no problem with 3200 lbs and mag shocks, it will be interesting to see how I need to tune the shocks on the Boss to replicate that move and how it will effect the rest of the track. I almost always have the shocks set to 5 front and 4 rear. 5 in front may be much too tight for that part of the track.

I decided on Pocono...with the new pavement and the long course I just couldn't resist. Looking forward to a great day and to meeting some fellow owners.

Saw the new pavement during the NASCAR race (and Juan did not even set it on fire ::)), looks nice and smooth.
Have a fun and safe day!

Probably 85% of WG is no scarier than any other track. In the past several years they have enlarged some runoff areas, particularly at turn 1. However, the other 15% of the track can bite you if screw up or have a mechanical problem. The speeds up the esses are insane if you have the cojones to take them flat out. If you are running flat through the esses, being less than a foot off the correct line can result in a terrifying experience. However, once you learn the track it is an absolute BLAST to drive! With the speeds and massive elevation changes it's the ultimate thrill ride. One of my favorite turns is #10, the fast left hander...leaves me grinning every time.

Watkins Glen is the only track where I have damaged a car, doing $16K damage to my Porsche in 1994. It's still one of my absolute favorite tracks along with VIR and Mid-Ohio. I've probably driven over 40 days at the Glen since 1986 and the actual rate of incidents I've seen there is no more than I've seen at any other track. Treat WG with the respect it deserves and it will reward you with a satisfying experience and a burning desire to come back!

To those going to Pocono this Sunday, I was thinking it would be cool to get garage space together. I don't know how crowded it will be or how many spaces are available but Joe Mills (from Hooked on Driving) mentioned in his confirmation email yesterday that space is limited and first come first serve. If anyone's interested we should probably get together first thing Sunday (7am) and go from there.

Great idea! Not sure if I am driving over in the morning or night yet. But I'll be there before 7am, and will meet up with you guys there.

I like the way you think, Steve. As long as we are in the same run group I'm in. Installed a harness bar and schroth 4-point belts earlier today...I can't wait to go fast!
