Use S550 front hubs to replace busted S197's (cheaper and better)

I posted this a long time ago on Corner Ponies after ACS murders my front wheel bearing (as a NASCAR turn can) but while at the track Tom (@67GTA) mentioned he;d never heard this.

From my original post:
Crossed my fingers a bit when i thought the bigger studs might not fit thru the brembo discs, but they fit fine. Not going to impress any ladies with their length, but same amount of threads as the OEM 1/2" studs, except 14mm strength,150ft/lbs and are about 50-60% the cost of OEM S197 replacement hub assemblies. My local track eats bearings with any decent tire, so that's always a good thing.
Fits fine on my daily and track wheels.
You'll need ten 14mm lug nuts and two new S550 axle nuts.
Part # FR3Z-1104-A

Same tone ring for ABS, they fit all S197 brakes and they of course fit my new S550 brakes as well.

Will those 14mm lug nuts fit into wheels made with 1/2-20 studs in mind? Forgestar F14's and 2007-2009 GT500 wheels in particular. The Forgestars already use small-hex lug nuts.

Norm
The 14mm studs will, as for lug nuts I'm sure it varies a lot based on the wheel. So I'm not sure. I can measure my particular lug nuts if you like.

There's no urgency on my end, as I recently put the FRPP hubs on.

But it would be good to know for future use especially if the FRPP hubs start getting hard to come by or production of them stops completely.

0.91" dia. is the largest at the cone shoulder, 0.75" dia is the largest on the driven end at the splines

Good question. I suspect there should be 14mm spline drive hardware that will fit. I don’t remember the socket I used on my F14s being that tight. Going up ~1.5mm in dia. only means ~0.75mm closer to the wall from lug centerline.

You guys sure keep coming up with new ways to spend other peoples money,;), might as well buy the hubs with the ARP studs in them, this will have to be checked out. Of course the next mod this will require is fitting larger studs on the rear axles. Can't have two different size lug nuts ;), maybe just buy new axles with the ARP studs in them, maybe gun drilled to lighten the axles. How deep is this rabbit hole anyway!

Cambered rear housing with lengthened 14mm studs - that’s rock bottom!

Reviving this old thread to see how this has aged...is the S550 hub lasting longer for you in terms of bearings themselves?

I ask because I know 14mm would be better on the studs, stronger than the 1/2-20 on the S197, but I'd probably be knocking them out and using 1/2-20 ARP studs with a .625 knurl instead. If the hub itself may last longer, it makes sense, otherwise the S197 hubs will be fine for me, I think.

Thanks!
