VIN Number locations

Unlike cars of old where you could pull back some weatherstrip or look in a fenderwell, they didn't seem to stamp VIN numbers in accessible places on sheet metal. Besides the windshield VIN and the door jam sticker, it's only stamped-in-metal on the middle of the cowl.... underneath the lip of the windshield. You'd have to remove the windshield and the adhesive to be able to read it. I'd assume it's inaccessibility is for anti-VIN tampering measures, but that likely won't help you in your salvage yard digging adventures.

Usually with the newer model years, the VIN or last few digits of it was encoded on barcode or QR labels affixed to major components. The engine block would also have the VIN (or partial VIN) laser etched onto one side of the engine block.

The body panels may have partial VIN standings or at the minimum, date codes from when the panel was stamped out for assembly.

Prior to 2005, the VIN locations were:
- VIN at base of windshield
- VIN on each side of front clip. There was a metal tag welded to the top of each side of the front clip with the partial VIN. These welded plates are only seen with the front fenders removed.
- VIN on driver side VCL label on B-pillar
- VIN at rear of engine block, usually on flat base of block at rear edge of lower intake
VIN labels that are white with Ford scripted oval and gray centers with complete VIN # were found in the following locations
- L & R front fenders, inner edge facing engine bay
- L & R rear 1/4 panels, inner drainage channel facing interior of trunk.
- Trunk or hatch lid, under it at leading edge near key cylinder OR at back edge near hinges
- Hood, usually one on L or R inside edge down near hinges
- Front bumper cover, on outside edge near latch facing you when hood is opened OR under the bumper cover facing ground
- Rear bumper cover, inside of cover lower edge facing trunk OR exposed and on exterior facing ground
- L & R rocker ground effects, on the inside of each, could only be seen if rocker was removed
- L & R doors, under each door near the drain holes, can only see by owning door and looking upward
- VIN - Transmission, partial VIN etched into side or bottom - some may have had a label too
