I'd like to hear any experience from the track with regard to wheel/tire packages (particularly running slicks).

Here is the result of some preliminary research by me:

Hoosier tire info from Jeff Spears at Hoosier:
Thanks for your patience awaiting a reply. Hoosier Tire does offer several tire sizes for 19” wheels in our Sports Car DOT tire lineup.
You are welcome to view them here: http://www.hoosiertire.com/specrr.htm
If you wanted to run our GT slicks, then you would have to purchase 18” wheels.
My recommendation:

Front: Item 46925 – P265/35ZR-19 R6(Tread Width – 9.6”)
Rear: Item 46935 – P295/30ZR-19 R6(Tread Width – 10.4”)

Write me if you have any more questions and if you need a contact to purchase these tires.

Also, I've been looking into track wheels for the LS & I like the FRPP:

http://www.fordracingpartsdirect.com/2010_BOSS_302R_BBS_LIGHTWEIGHT_WHEEL_18X10_p/m-1007-r1810.htm

2010 BOSS 302R BBS LIGHTWEIGHT WHEEL 18X10 -- M-1007-R1810
Fits 2010 BOSS 302R Race Car for Grand-Am Competition
18"x10" size
Fits front and rear
5/8" wheel studs required
Weight 20-21 lbs
5-lug, 4.5-inch bolt circle
7.2-inch backspacing

This looks like a nice relatively light wheel at a good price, ...however, the stud requirement is 5/8" and I believe the LS has 1/2" wheel studs.

Anyone have a solution? I suppose it is a dumb question with an obvious outcome:
- either/or, but can't run stock wheels for street & FRP's for track...

Just thought to ask.

Since Hoosier has more size availability in 18" I'm leaning towards 18" wheels. (I like Hoosiers)
Has anyone tried a 295 or 305 on the rear with a 285 up front?
Will these sizes fit the stock wheel well?
Any experience with offset requirements of larger tires (is there any room on the inside of the tire well)?

*****Has anyone experienced oil starvation running slicks or other large tire packages?*****

Many thanks for any information.

By the way, I think this is a really good forum with excellent contributors.

I've been running Enkei PF01 18 x 10.5 38mm offset rears and 18 x 9.5 35mm offset fronts with a Nitto 555RII 305/35/18 and 285/35/18 so yes I've been running a 285 front. You could run those Hoosier slicks on these wheels as well. A friend of mine in AZ just bought these wheels and is running them with Hoosier R6 295/30/18 rears and 275/35/18 fronts. I was planning to run these same Hoosiers, but wanted to try some slicks so the ones you listed interest me.

I also have a set of the Boss 302S wheels from FRPP in 19 x 10 and 19 x 9 that I ran Hoosier R6 295/30/19 and 265/35/19s on earlier this year. I was about 1-2 seconds faster than the Nittos, but I wished they were 10mm wider out back and 20 up front. I'm going to run these wheels on the street next year after wearing out the R6s then buy another set of track wheels. At this point still leaning toward another set of the Enkeis.

Hi!

305/35/18 and 285/35/18 would be very nice. Perhaps a bit big in the rear for the 10", or even 10.5" rim section since I believe the 305 best fits an 11-12" section, but 305 with 285 is very tempting none-the-less.

R6 295/30/18 rears and 275/35/18 fronts as you also mention above is probably the right size for the rims (also mentioned above by you), but I will contact Hoosier for their opinion on a 10.5 for the 305.

Thanks for posting.

- Any experience with oil starvation??

The Nittos run a tad narrower. The approved rim size for the 305 is 10.0" - 12.0" and the tread width is on a measured rim of 11" so no problems running on the 10.5 and you could go down to a 10.0. Unfortunately Hoosier jumps from 295 up to 315 and that does require a minimum of 11" to run. That's the main reason I've been running the 555RIIs as they give me the best size options. The Toyo R888s come in the same sizes and I used to run them quite a bit. I may try them this spring on the Boss, but they were running $400 a set more than the Nittos last year, and as much as R6s so it didn't make sense to run them.

I haven't had any issues with oil starvation (yet) and I have about 2000 track miles on the Boss. I can't say for sure with slicks........

Given the weight of this car, a set of Hoosiers won't last long, so, I hear you loud & clear about shelling put for slicks every weekend!!

Hoosier's 315 is technically the same tire as what used to be their 305. (in the past, the 315 was actually listed by Hoosier as a 305.)
- A moot point since the section width for both is 11.

I will call Jeff bout the 10/10.5.

By the way, those Enkie wheels seem very inexpensive on Tire Rack??
Running large tires on a heavy car at speed on the track, I need to be confident in the wheels.
Do you know anything about Enkie?

Thanks.

Yep going through tires like gas stinks. :'( I'm getting about 2-3 days a set on the fronts driving hard. Rears 3-5. I ran these same Enkeis on my GT500 for 3 years before the Boss and it's 400 lbs heavier yet. Enkei has made race wheels for a long time and I've never heard anything bad about their quality. They're made in Japan and they're pretty well known for quality product.

Here's an article that claims they are the best quality wheels in the industry:

Japanese wheels are OK with me.
I'll check them out for sure.
Many thanks for the link.

I'd run D-force LTW5 18x10 (ET43) wheels sold by Vorshlag instead of the FRPP BBS wheels due to cost (a little over half @ $309). The D-force is about 20 lbs, no idea what the BBS weighs. Unless you are hell bent on getting the uber cool BBS wheels, IMHO, cost-wise, the D-force is a better choice.

..I'll check them out.
The FRP/BBS runs "20-21" lbs per description in the catalog.
My primary concern is strength.
The Vorshlag's look good too, though.
And, also important to know, the FRP/BBS requires a 5/8 wheel stud, so is a major pain...

If you want strength then CCW is the way to go. Machined from a forged block of Al with custom offsets. Strong and light and well worth the $$$

Very nice!
Pricey, but not crazy.
Looks like they have the right sizes for just about any requirement...
Many Thanks. I will check these out.

Has anybody heard of or tried these wheels, TSW Nurburgring? They have various sizes & are lightweight. Has anyone tried the NITTO Invo tire

Yep those will work. Not sure about that tire, maybe for the street they will be ok.

Also check out Forgestar wheels.

Planning on running the Enkei PF01's 18x9, 18x10.5 with theses Hoosier R6's;
Hoosier R6 sizes
295/40-18 27.2" #46844

255/40-18 26.2 #46830

Gary
is there a problem with the 1" diameter difference front to back with the Advance track or ABS computers? I want to run staggered and everything is a 1" diameter stagger.
Thanks
Steve

I don't think that is a good setup.

1. The 18x9 front is too small..... 18x9.5 has way more room to run bigger tires. Also the smallest tire you would ever want to run will fit on 18x9.5. There is no reason to get the 18x9.

2. Your front tires are way to small. You are trying to run factory size front but increase the rear... I would and am going to run 275/35/18 front and 295/30/18 rear.

Steve,

No problems at all that I've experienced, but I run with all the nannies turned off. I've forgotten, or not held the button long enough for the message "AdvanceTrac Off" a couple times and had bad results where the computer was fighting me in turns or braking zones. To me it's almost impossible to track a car without turning it all off, but I tend to drive with my hair on fire. I can't say whether that's due to a difference in tire height or just the nannies interfering with my fun. Since I don't run with AdvanceTrac on the streets either, I'm not sure what's "normal".

Also, I concur with Adam's post above on the sizing. In my experience you want to have approximately 1" to 1.5" width stagger with the Boss stock suspension to keep the car neutral. As you get outside that bound you'll get an oversteer bias (<1" stagger) or and understeer bias (>1.5")

Nitto Invo is a street tire. I would go with NT-01 if you are sticking with Nitto.
I'd run the NT01 if it came in better staggered sizes. They jump from 275 to 315 which is a pretty big spread:

Tire Size Depth Height Width Rim Size Load
245/40ZR18 371-020 6.3 25.55 9.72 8.0-(8.5)-9.5 1433@51
275/35ZR18 371-010 6.3 25.55 10.91 9.0-(9.5)-11.0 1521@51
275/40ZR18 371-130 6.3 26.65 10.94 9.0-(9.5)-11.0 1709@51
315/30ZR18 371-000 6.3 25.35 12.60 10.5-(11.0)-11.5 1653@51

Most people running the NT01 run square 275/35/18 with different sway bars.

http://nittotire.com/Tire/nt01#size

Here are the 555RII sizes:

Size Depth Height Width Rim Size Load
285/35ZR18 97Y 181-010 5.0 25.91 11.22 9.5-(10.0)-11.0 1609@44
305/35ZR18 101Y 181-020 5.0 26.30 12.48 10.0-(11.0)-12.0 1819@44
