The World-Challenge series came to Barber as part of the Indy Car weekend. Great facility and awesome track.

Well, Race 1 on Saturday went fairly well for the Boss contingent with Jack Roush Jr finishing 2nd, Buffomante 4th, and Alec Udell 5th... not so good for the guys in Race 2 earlier today:

"...caution flag came out almost immediately after the start as four GTS Ford Mustangs Boss 302s collided heading into Turn 1. The race ended quickly for Dean Martin, of Westland, Mich., in the No. 50 Picture Cars East/Rehagen Racing Ford Mustang Boss 302S, Alec Udell, of The Woodlands, Texas in the No. 17 Watson Racing Motorsports Development Group Ford Mustang Boss 302S, Tony Buffomante, of Naperville, Ill. in the No. 33 Capaldi Racing/Ford Racing Ford Mustang Boss 302S, and Jack Roush Jr., of Livonia, Mich. in the No. 60 ROUSH Road Racing Ford Mustang Boss 302R."

Pretty much ended my enthusiasm for the rest of the race... then the rain came in to finish it off! ::)

That's a bummer. I'm hoping for better luck next weekend for the Boss 302R teams when the IMSA CTSC comes to the West Coast and Laguna Seca. I'll be there Saturday for the race.

Here is a link to an in-car video of the mustang wreck on the first lap of the Pirelli World Challange at Barber.

What a mess... good video of how it all started.

Patrick said they had just built that car for Alec... only it's second race. It arrived back in their shop yesterday for repairs. :-\

A bit like a modern revival of the 1969 St Jovite Trans Am carnage (except for the cause...!

It was run at the next race on August 3, 1969 at St. Jovite and wrecked (also driven by Horst Kwech as #2). The 9F02R112073 car was in fact one of the three Factory Boss cars wrecked at the 1969 St. Jovite race, when George Follmer driving the Bud Moore Boss broke a valve spring while leading the race, causing the valve to hole the piston. Oil poured onto the track causing him to spin in his own oil. He hit nothing and parked the car on the side of the track. He jumped the wall in time for the blue #1, Peter Revson (9F02M148629), Shelby Team Mustang and the blue #2, Horst Kwech (9F02R112073), Shelby team Mustang to come around the turn, hit the oil and slam the Follmer #16 car (9F02R112074). As George Follmer tells the story, the corner worker only put out a yellow flag for the car on the side of the track and did not flag for the oil.
