Yet Another Oil Thread.....

But not the one most are thinking.

I just changed my oil today from Mobil 1 5w-30 to Redline 5w-50. I noticed my oil temperature has cooled off by 15-20 deg. When I come to a stop the temp cools off even more. At idle the Mobil 1 would hang around 180*, now it's about 160*.

Does the thicker oil transfer heat better?? I do have an external cooler in series with the factory cooler.

Just wondering.....

I guessing that's just on the street?

Might be better thermal conductivity from the Redline formulation. I hate to think that the difference is from friction...

Why were you running 5W-30?

I noticed my coolant temps (don't have oil temp gauge yet...) were about 5C higher on Motorcraft 5w50 that was starting to shear compared with brand new Castrol 5w50. And when I had M1 5w50, coolant temps were consistently 5 degrees C lower compared with the Motorcraft too. When I had the Motorcraft tested, it had sheared significantly (between 30-40 weight), and the M1 had not sheared as much. I'm still on the Castrol, so can't speak to how that has held up so far.

Not solid data, just observations.
