So im building a 2018 s550 manual car strictly for road racing (SCCA T2 and NASA AI). I have searched and read some threads as to all this but none had definitive answers. So here is the question: What radiator, diff cooler setup, trans cooler setup, and oil cooler setup is the best to use for road racing this car. I can relocate the oil filter and will be using the ford motorsport 12q road race oil pan. Part numbers will be extremely helpful as well. Cost is not a concern for the parts/kits - racing is expensive lol. Thanks.

For a engine cooler a Setrab 948 is the typical oil cooler but make sure you use 12-AN (NOT 10-AN) oil lines.

Oil Cooler Setrab 960 with remote filter to accept FL-1A sized Wix race filter 3/4"-16 thread and -12 AN lines. I run a Fluidyne 19 qt all aluminum 3 row radiator but C&R makes a good one too. Trans cooler will be a custom setup which I have a setrab 119 fan pack with a Setrab 17-311-06-IF05 SUSA Mini Gear Oil Circulation Fluid Pump with AN06 Filter and 150µ Filter and -6 AN hoses. Matrix is mounted in front of the left side fender well and pump is mounted to the frame rail below it. Differential cooler Full Tilt Boogie makes a decent kit that I used for 4 years, recently swapped to a

with -8AN teflon stainless braided lines and same pump as the trans cooler. Sorry I don't have pictures but should have a few later this weekend as I have to do post race maintenance.

Thanks for all that info! pics would be great for the trans cooler and oil cooler stuff. Is the diff cooler safe under the spare tire well? thanks again!

Like the idea of a transmission oil filter, lost a pump after the last tranny failure. Now that the 960 is easier to find and not much more then the 948, the 960 would be well worth it!

Hey I have a full trans cooler and diff cooler setups for sale. Used two events. I’ll send you a PM separately. I’m drifting now and don’t need the cooling for trans and diff.

engine setrab 948/960 and -12 lines.

With the talk about -12AN lines and flow restrictions of -10AN would anyone have any concerns running a thermostatic oil filter stand with -12 adapters and lines?

I have been looking at this Improved Racing one with their Gen 1 Coyote Remote Oil Filter adapter and using a Setrab 948.

This seems to me to be a good solution for a road and track car where the potential to overly cool the oil during road driving is a concern.

Yes you'll be fine with that. That said, it still takes 15mins driving for me to get to 160*F with my Setrab thermostatic sandwich plate and 948. Getting above 212 to boil off water on the street is not possible, at least not without risk of going to jail.

Still not sure about 10AN va 12AN Though.
For pressure or quantity?
I have 10AN and running constant 80psi of pressure in a 2018.

I use a 660. Slighty smaller than 948.
But with good boxing and lots of louvers.
I dont have a tgermostat i just warm well the engine when cold.
Of course is laptimes Related but i feel i do a good job in terms of speeds. :)
d
The other cooler ( the smaller) is the 10speed cooler.
I didnt perfectly stack so everything gets direct some fresh air.
Last. I use a mishimoto bigger radiator.

There are mutliple option for diff cooler.
They all seems to work well.

I have a ducted setup with a setrab 960 oil cooler in a manual trans S550 and I think its too much oil cooler. If the outside temp is below 65 I cant get the oil to 220 on a real temp gauge. The car thinks its above 265 but that is due to the algorithm it uses to determine oil temp. If I had to do it again I would have chosen the 948, as I believe its better suited for a S550 with manual trans, for running a year round series (anything from 30 deg to 100deg days). Possibly the 960 is a better option on a automatic car since you have to deal with trans cooling up front also?

so we just had the car at its first real race at road Atlanta this past weekend (scca hoosier super tour and car is classed in T2). I went with a c&r radiator, c&r oil cooler mounted behind the rad and a small 12" fan next to that for when in pits/red flag/etc. We did a fuel cell in the trunk so got rid of the stock tank and put the trans cooler w/ fan and pump on one side where the tank was (setrab mini pump and series 1 19 row cooler w/ fan) and the diff cooler and pump on the other side (setrab mini pump w/ derale cooler w/ fan). seemed to work well and all temps well below warning levels. I am pulling my temps from the oil pan, an adapter in the upper cooling hose for water, drilled out stock location in diff cover (drilled so sensor can get into fluid), and a special adapter in the drain side of the transmission.

At least in my case... BOTH! switching my oil cooler lines to 12AN from 10AN got me to +90psi when hot. With oil pressure reaching 100psi at WOT. My previous set up was with a MMR sandwich plate and the smaller 10AN lines, it was getting to a max of 75psi at WOT... Leading to Multiple blown motors.

For size of the engine oil cooler it also depends on your driving style/category as well.. trips to 8000rpm will generate a lot more heat then going to 7500.

I found W2W generated a lot more heat since your are often stuck behind someone and its harder to get clean air. After all when qualifying, heat is seldom a issue. But after the 10th lap flat out it can be.

I spoke with ford performance and they recommended an12 lines for the coyote, that was a good enough reason for me to change

Yup, you can see that the Ford Coyote sandwich plate is in 12AN.

EDIT: Ford moved up from 10AN to 12AN with the 2015+ Coyote sandwich plate.
The 10 vs 12 issue goes back a long way, it might have been for the Boss 302 race cars running Coyote's. There was a post about engine problems by Kohr (or whatever the name was before it was changed to Kohr) and from that point on, -12AN has been the spec for cooler plumbing.

True, but you can still see some Ford sandwich plates for the gen1 in 10AN for sale, like a old booby trap waiting to blow something up.. I wish I had known about the Ford recommendation sooner 😭 . It was @Fabman who pointed it out to me after seeing my 10AN setup some years ago.
