Road Atlanta Off Track Excursion

Totally right. Road Atlanta and Mosport are the fastest tracks in North America, gotta have your big boy pants on for them. These are not tracks to take lightly. They are not good tracks to learn on, tight, twisty and technical is the place to start IMHO.
Spot on. I have driven it about 6 times this year (Novice solo) as one of my instructors said you need to respect EVERY turn on Road Atlanta. Two weeks ago I almost spun out coming out of 3 because I apexed too late on 2. You need to be dialed in each session and concentrate on every turn.

It took me a while to remember turn 3 was there . . . lol

One guy spun out at turn 3 when I was there, ending up halfway on, halfway off the track, causing a Ferrari almost to stop, causing me almost to hit the Ferrari, causing a Mazda Miata almost to hit me sideways (the Miata was sideways, and I could hear those tires screaming) - but none of us hit anybody, LOL, and everybody continued on

Nice save. It didn't look like you accelerated too hard out of 10b??? I also drive Road Atlanta and just got a 2015 Mustang GT one month ago. Did you ever have any problems coming out of turn 5? I am afraid my wheels may brake loose on that turn. Any insights are appreciated.
I accelerate harder there than other turns because it is uphill, and it feels like I am being pulled into the track.

I know every car is different but before I made my trip to Road Atlanta I watched this walkthrough video. It made me more comfortable with T12.

The one turn that I couldn’t prepare for was setting the car up properly under the bridge for T11. Looks like your going to the moon but had to learn that I cannot hold my wheel straight otherwise I would be off on drivers left of the track. Once I got that down, I grew to be pretty comfortable with the track. Going flat out through the esses is pretty fun.

One thing I realized it how fast you can take 6 to make up for time out of 7 which is pretty slippery.

Hey Junkyard Dog

Are you still driving Road Atlanta? I am novice (solo) drove it 8 times last year and 3 this year but still learning a lot. I am driving with Chin May 30 and 31, 2026. Send me a PM if you want to meet and say Hi and talk Stangs. Or stop by the pit I have grey 2015 Stang with black cowl hood, number 467. Might also drive a few times later this summer/fall.

LOL, I have been there only once (and only one track day at that), so you now have more than 10X or 20X my experience on that track. I will definitely return. I am just not sure when. With a family and kids I have to weight out cost, tires, etc. I am definitely not going to run the same tires I run on the street again after seeing what happens to tracked tires. I really want to make it again this summer, but we'll see.

PS - looking above that was all my excited gibberish posting within 2 months of having been there. It was such a rush. 😆

I'll definitely reach out or post somewhere here for when I visit Road Atlanta again.

I am using a Garmin Catalyst for recording. Normally you would have the telemetry data showing on the video, but I had to use the raw footage of the spin because I couldn’t export it with telemetry since it wasn’t a full lap.

Now that you have had it longer, is this always the case? What I mean is, if you leave the track, all you will ever have is the video, none of the other information like speed and so on?

I've not played with attempting to export with telemetry for any other partial laps, so I can't say for certain. The data is certainly there, but the way the Catalyst puts the telemetry on the video is during the export process. So if it doesn't recognize a lap (for instance if you go off track and then pit prior to passing the starting line), then that does not show up as a lap on the Catalyst, so it doesn't let you view or export it from the software as best I can tell. I still like the Catalyst for ease of use purposes. They have come out with the new Garmin Catalyst 2 which is a smaller all in one device, but honestly I prefer the version one model because you can grab the tablet out of the car between sessions and review it without syncing data to a phone.
